Is Navigation update a scam?

So This is my first GM product and first in car Navigation. My father has an Impala and he said he pays to update his navigation every year? I said well if onstar sends directions to it then they certainly have to be up to date? I can’t imagine a new hospital not being in there? So I did some research and see that the map in my Truck is coded as a 2017 map and I have a 2018 Escalade. So I go to gm nav store look at 2021 and sure enough there is a test to check for a subway in Detroit,MI that will only work in 2021 update. Well it worked in my 2017. I asked the Dealer and Onstar and they both said if you have onstar with turn by turn it automatically updates? I bet it updates regardless? How many GM people have bought Discs that were not needed? Maybe there was a thread on this? What are some thoughts? So I think if you have onstar turn by turn you don’t need to update? Any insight or other POVs?

Yes, onstar updates maps. But i still use WAZE because 1) Cadillac nav with traffic doesn’t route around traffic like waze. Not even close. 2) Cadillac nav has sent us to a totally berserk wrong direction/ place. After 8 months testing on short and long trips - we use googlemap long ranges and waze short range.

I
I have no use for the Cadillac Nav or Onstar. Onstar is overpriced in my opinion. I never used it when it was free when the car was new. I use Waze. Not only does Waze provide updated and consistent navigation, but it alerts me where the cops are hiding. I frequently drive from NJ to FL and I can't drive the speed limit for 17 hours!
what I find is that MPH that are in HUD won’t change unless you update maps I’m assuming. BUT if you put in an address in the My Cadillac app send to in car navigation You have updated map route. If you try that same address directly in NAV won’t work? That’s only points put in after your current Maps year. Yes In this generation the navigation is trash. Why They don’t allow upgrade to what is used now in Cadillac

With Android Auto/Apple Carplay, the navigation and updates are a joke and waste of time. I tried using the standard navigation and it's painfully slow, looks ancient, and not worth bothering to upgrade the map even if they provided the update for free. Google maps is well integrated when you connect your phone and I believe it has the speed limits on there which are up to date.

After having a loaner XT6 with wireless Android Auto, this is the only feature I wish the CUE system had.

I use Apple Maps of late. Waze is good and so is Google Maps. I just like the way Apple Maps integrates with the car, my phone, and my Apple Watch. The latest IOS update included an updated Maps that is trying to compete with Waze. A little competition is good. Factory navs are problematic for me. Clunky to search for locations unless you pre-load with phone app. Often pick suboptimal routes. I use them, but only for entertainment. I am an OnStar fan ever since my wife hit a deer at 70 mph on the interstate and my dad totaled his car on black ice in IA. OnStar was a big help in both cases. Hope it never happens, but if something goes seriously wrong OnStar is a safety net.
