My condenser was damaged vehicle was off and some of the gas leaked out. My low charge compressor disabled warning isn't on though. Can the a/c be recharged by engaging the compressor with defrost, or do I need to have it be warm enough out I can actually run the air conditioning? It's around 40-50 right now in my area

You should be able to run the compressor in DEFROST - IF there's enough system hi/lo pressure to get things going.

Yes you will be able to recharge r134a below 60 degrees. I believe the compressor shuts off when it goes below 38F.

As stated above, follow the correct procedure.
