Been there, done that - twice - when our son-in-law was the Main Power Assistant Engineer (Nuclear) in USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) out of Norfolk, VA. You're onboard at 0530, underway at about 0630 out to the NORVA OpAreas. Yes, it's all real, up close and personal. Matter of fact, his oldest son and daughter rode the ship for 3 days on a run from Jacksonville, FL to Norfolk, VA when they were about 11 and 13.

The landings are right exciting when you can count the rivets in the wings............

My Dad and a sister spent 14 hours in USS PIPER (SS 409) when I was stationed onboard in '59 - '62. Did a bunch of dives and surfaces, shot torpedo tube water slugs, fun day.
