I thought that a lot of them actually came to dealerships without sunroofs and then they got put in. I know they told me they could do it but i have just never had anything that large done after the fact to a car and am a little bit nervous.

No, that does not happen. They cannot be retrofitted, it would be a major undertaking costing a lot of $$$$. Even so, you are only leasing the vehicle and you cannot make major modification to the vehicle.

I had it done many years ago with one of my Cadillac's and was a HUGE mistake! (87 Deville Toruing, sunroof leaked like crazy and was constantly going off track...was a total waste of money) Things may have changed since I had it done but I will never do it again nor recommend it to anyone! (not even my worst enemy) Also, as others have stated, DO NOT do any major modifications to your car if it is a lease...trust me.

I made a similar mistake with a 2004 Tahoe - can't recommend strongly enough against it - similar results. The dealership used their vendor but not long after warranty was up bad things happened

A factory sunroof cannot be retrofitted without (for starters) literally replacing the roof of the vehicle. Mounting points for the motor/track do not exist, and if you simply cut a hole in the roof, there is no flange for the glass to seal against. Aftermarket sunroof installs are very different from factory ones.

There are many very well designed and made aftermarket sunroofs. When installed by an experienced shop, they are as good as a factory roof, some even with more features. Leaking won't be an issue with a proper install and adjustment.

On a leased vehicle though, I HIGHLY doubt it's allowed.

Just so I/we all understand - the authorized Cadillac dealer where you leased your car told you they would install a factory Ultra View moonroof?

Yes - when i leased it they told me that as long as it was done there at their location, not only could it be done, but we could work something out with the leasing company that since it was increasing the value of the car they would allow it. I get the feeling that the sales person (no longer there) was not being very honest with me.

I think I am going to have to resign myself to the fact that I wont have a sunroof for the next 3 years - which is very disappointing and the first time in about 15 years I have not had one. But it sounds like putting one in is not going to be a viable option.

Thanks for the feedback!

While I wouldn't recommend installing a panoramic sunroof or ANY sunroof on a leased car, I had an ASC power sunroof installed on my 1999 Grand Cherokee in 1998, and 15 years later it's still working like new with no leaks. It can also be set to auto close upon turning off the ignition.
