First of all, WOW, I love it! The shifter feels much better. I love the notchy feel too.

My question is about the noise that everyone was talking about. The best I can describe it is.... If you go to the dentist, the suction thingy. It sounds like that when I'm in gear. I don't have noise when I'm shifting though. At least no more than stock.

Is this the noise everyone refers to? Or did I screw something up?

I also gotta thank Chip for bringing the shifter up from the US for me, and mostly my dad for putting it in :D

The noise I had (and the reason I switched to a UUC) was more like a playing card in the spokes of a bike, and a high pitched "reeeeereereeereee" when downshifting, which was just gear noise transmitted through the solid shifter. I tried the dynamat wrap on the shaft (hehe), and it was still loud.

The B&M shifted great, but I ditched it for a UUC from Lindsay and everything is sweet now.

Hmmm. I get the noise at high RPMs or when I'm accelerating mostly. I can hear it's a metallic kinda noise, which I beleive is just noise from the drivetrain.

I did drive a V with the UUC and I prefer the feel of the B&M. I guess I'll just live with it until I get my B&B. :D

Yep- that's the noise. I was loudest for me during acceleration also.

The other issue I had with the B&M was heat related- once it got warmed up, it wouldn't pop back to neutral. Throw it over between 5th and 6th and it just hung there. I believe I may have overtightened the bottom nut, and once the exhaust heated it up the expansion caused it to bind.

Keep an eye out for that one.

Hmmm, I have that issue even when cold with reverse. I pull it out of reverse and it kinda sticks at one point.

We did put some silicone grease on it though.

It does transmit a bit of gear/synchro sound to the cabin. The Dynamat took care of 95+% of that for me. I don't really notice that roughly 5% increase in sound, nor have other V owners who've driven my car.

Just my $0.02.

Where'd you get the dynamat? Was it spray on or what?

Thanks. :)

Crutchfield's got it. Twenty bucks for enough to do four shifters ... I did mine and, over time, sent three pieces to various people here on the forum.
Is it spray on or do I wrap it around the shifter? Do I just remove the boot and wrap it around the stick?

Thanks. :)

Jon,

that is what I plan to do. Spray the heck out of it before I install it. I will post it up before and after. Damn Dallas I can't wait much more. By the time he is ready atlantic speed will have the new ones!

I tried the spray-on first time around and didn't help much. Randy was nice enough to send me some of that extra dynamat that I actually wrapped over the spray on stuff and that worked much better.

I also got the binding under heat that Tony mentioned above. It was really bad after adding the headers. But then I greased up all the moving parts with high temp anti-seize grease as suggested by another forum member and that has helped a lot as well.

Thats will cure the heat issues just be aware you will need to relube every 3-6 months. Fortunately you can reach your hand up in there and do it without removing anything. Just do it while the car is cold (don't ask how I know).:thepan:

Yep, make sure it's cold and if you've got small enough kids you don't even have to jack the car or get your hands dirty. My 8 and 10 year old both did it for me last time. :bouncy:
