Several possibilities here.
1. The car was in an accident and the trunk was open for sometime during the whole issue and never got dried out properly.
2. There was something spilled in the trunk and it never got dried out properly.
3. (most likely scenario) Along the front/upper area of the trunk, there are seams where the rear deck and 1/4 panel are attached to each other. They SHOULD be coated with something called "seam-sealer". This stuff has a tendancy to crack and leak. It's also possible that someone did some bodywork in that area and never "properly" resealed those welds. This is a VERY COMMON water leak on many GM cars, not just K, C, and D-bodies.
