I have a '98 STS that has air only coming out of the dash, door, and rear passenger vents. Cycling through the airflow modes does not change where the air comes out of. In the Seville, it seems to be above the driver side temperature actuator above the gas pedal but seems almost inaccessible without removing the entire dash. For reference, it seems to be this actuator that has gone bad.

It looks like the other 3 but is attached to a circular white plate. A while back I would commonly hear a creaking/clicking noise coming from the center of the dash shortly before the defrost stopped working and now strangely, that is all it can do. Does anyone know a way to replace this part without having to the entire dash apart in a Seville. The Florida summer is coming soon and I'd rather not have to go through it without air. Any help is much appreciated.

I think it can be done from beneath. There may be a tutorial in the Tech Tips section.

always start by checking for codes -
if you don't know how - go here and read the entire post -
http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/cadillac-deville-1985-2005-including-1985/138257-how-pull-codes-dtcs.html

all these parts are monitored - and if they fail - a code is set -

did you get a MODE DOOR fault code?

I see you already had the clicking noise -
-------------------

the MODE DOOR ACTUATOR is what changes WHERE the air comes from -

the correct part is ACDELCO 1572631- $48.65 - including shipping -
http://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-15-72631-Original-Equipment-Conditioning/dp/B0016IKTUQ/ref=au_as_r?ie=UTF8&Make=Cadillac|46&Model=Seville|413&Year=1998|1998&n=15684181&newVehicle=1&s=automotive&vehicleId=1&vehicleType=automotive

seems almost inaccessible without removing the entire dash
it can be done without pulling the dash apart -

you WILL increase your vocabulary -
inventing words/phrases - describing/directed to the engineers -

EVERY bone/muscle in your body WILL complain for several days -
I think they built the entire car around the HVAC stack -

there should be a HOW-TO in the TechTips forum -
http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/cadillac-tech-tips-how-fix/

also look for videos on YouTube -

wait for MoistCabbage to post -
he pulled the entire interior of his STS out -
and might have a couple tips for you -

I just pulled the codes and got 2 for the air system.
IPM B1341: Air Mix Door 2 Movement Fault
IPM B1344: HTR/DEF/AC Door Movement Fault

Then one is probably the Mode actuator and the other is the passenger side temperature actuator which doesn't work and so I removed it a few days ago until I put a new one in. I also just replaced the actuator down in the driver footwell behind the trim.
