Unfortunately, I may be doing it again. Nothing as catastrophic this time, but at my last track event (back in October) the engine developed a very audible tick on the driver's side. Maybe a lifter? Not sure. Oil sample to Blackstone came back with elevated lead. Bad bearing?

A bad lifter wouldn't normally cause elevated lead, and a bad bearing wouldn't normally cause a tick like I'm hearing. Do I have two failures? I dunno.

I didn't make much progress on troubleshooting before the cold weather arrived, at which point working on the car in the driveway became much less enjoyable, so the car has just been sitting.

Yeah I saw your reply in the other engine thread. Hate to hear it. At least this time you will have better knowledge at the situation. I know all about working in a small garage as I'm in same boat. But it's doable. I'm getting it all ready for pulling and hoping to get that finished tonight. I see a guy on the V1 FB forum just yanked his out with trans attached so thats what I'm shooting for. Looks he got it out without much BS.

I’ve been following your post for awhile now on *************** glad you transferred it over. It’s funny how you say “only” 369 days, I couldn’t go without my V that long! But atleast you did it all yourself. A catastrophic failure like that had to attribute to something these ls cars a pretty stout. Maybe tracking, it burned a little oil and ran dry. I know I accumulate about a 1/4 quart in my catch can after a hard day at the 1/4 mile about 10 runs. But normal driving I’ll get that in maybe 3000 miles. I’m glad she’s back on the road though good for you, and great information!!

I'm in the process of putting mine back in the car after the 3rd engine pull since new (original LS6 cracked block, replacement LSA block had lifter come apart resulting in low oil pressure and melt down, and most recently an axle came out of a lifter roller and got lifter stuck up in lifter bore). Gets easier each time :bigroll:

I've never pulled it with the trans attached. This is the first time I'm dropping the trans completely out, installing the engine and then reinstalling the trans. The last 2 times I put it back in I found getting the engine mated with the trans while the trans was still in it's installed location was the most difficult part of the process.

Having a heated garage in the basement is a lifesaver!

Comp short travel but I don't blame the lifters. The first failure was due to the trunnion upgrade on the rockers being bad. The bearings literally ate their way into the trunnion. It appeared that they were not properly heat treated. The second set did not have the preload set right (my fault) and the one that got failed got pounded to death. :( That said, I am using LS7 lifters this go around.
