I have a 1987 Cadillac El Dorado where I had the steering column rebuilt by Steering Column Services and they did a great job for a great price. Now I am having the worst time getting the U-Joint at the bottom of the floor board to open up enough to slide the end shaft of the steering column onto the U-Joint opening enough to bolt it all together and finish the build.

Can anyone suggest a way to get the collar to open up enough to slide onto the steering column shaft? I have tried to wedge a screwdriver into the side to open it up but cannot get it to stay open.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you,

A hammer works well on the screwdriver. BTDT.
