How to: iPhone/Android integration (head unit controlling mobile phone)

Just finished up my Mimics X2 integration, check it out!

Here is one part of the MimicsX2 module (the part that goes inside the head unit)

This is the underside of that module that we need to solder on special connectors

Here are the connectors before soldering

Rob, that came out SWEET!!! Congrats an a very cool install.

I am installing a Android PC using the X2 and the same button panel in the next few weeks, and will start a thread on that myself.

But, just wanted to say really nice job!

There is ALOT to make this work. But it IS possible. I will document everything this week, just exhausted today.
Looking forward to the docs on this Big Rob. Thanks for sharing. It's interesting to see that the factory screen can handle the 'swipe' motion. I thought that was a touch-panel specific feature.
Really looking forward to a write up on this. I want to do it!!
Very nice job! Looking forward to the write up as well!
Can't wait Rob, little curious of the issues you had.
Nice work and nice write up
WOW, this is awesome! I had never heard of this before - ok, I'm not too tech savey :hmm: great post, thanks big rob1!
Is that running the stock touch overlay or an aftermarket one? CustomGadz calls for a 4 wire touch overlay, what does the OEM nav use?
Any thought into gutting the OEM nav and replacing with an 8" hi res capacitive touch screen controlled off a sole spare phone to act as a PC? THAT would be badass, so long as you can Bluetooth pair one phone to another and wifi tether to your day to day phone. Maybe NFC tag your daily phone to turn on the Bluetooth and wifi when you place it in the console, etc.

Yes that is the stock 4 wire touch overlay.
No thought into doing that. I LOVE my steering wheel controls, and the thought of losing would soley prevent this!.
Im sure there is a way to retain them. They are resistive based, IE: each button rides a common wire with a different resistance for each button. Not too hard to build an adapter.

But yes, I understand the simplicity of "it just works" :D

This is the passenger size of the radio, you must first take off the mounting brackets on each side, then remove the screens circled in red

You must also pop off the bezel around the radio, start on top and work your way down each side, and finally at the bottom (bottom is the hardest)

When you get the bezel popped off, disconnect the ribbon cable from the face.

Here is the bezel off the radio

Close up of the screws to remove to slide out the screen

Close up of the screws to remove to slide out the screen. The silver screws can't be mixed up with the gold screws, different lengths/materials

Screw to remove the top plate of the radio.

Pry on plate to remove it.

Remove these three screws to loosen the amp section of the amp.

Remove this screw to remove the antenna hook up.

Now remove these silver screws and the aluminum heatsink (all the silver screws are the same length, just don't get them mixed up with the gold screws)

Lift the board up and back

Lift the board up and back

Remove these two screws on the back to allow the screen to slide forward.

You need to unplug these two plugs, one is 3 wires, other is 4. The circles indicate where they are plugged in. (this is probably only for tilting screen models)

Sliding the screen forward slowly, you will now unplug these two white ribbon cables.

Unplug these cables.

Unbolt these 8 screws (these are special sized from the other gold screws, don't mix these up)

When you remove them this PCB becomes lose, flip it over (i left the white ribbon cable attached) This gold cable is the touch overlay that we will be plugging the mimics into.

Here is the mimicsX2 plugged into the touch overlay, and the output of the mimics back into the PCB.

Better angle

This is where I mounted mine, there was enough room here, but the cables are very tight, be careful not to rip or stretch them.

This is how I routed the cables INTO the nav unit, through the black opening on the side.

Better shot

You have to cut this bracket to slide it over the wires, or feed the wires through in the previous step (i forgot to do that, so I cut it)

Finished side shot

Finished assembly with the switch plate and bluetooth board.

This is where I mounted all of my things.

This is the passenger side console cover removed.

Let the questions begin :)

These are the special connectors that need to be soldered onto the mimics board for our trucks

This is the special cable as well.

You only need 2 connectors and 1 cable, but I couldn't find them in smaller quantities.

omg. That's a whole lot of work. Props for the patience and dedication. Very detailed.

I couldn't do this myself, but certainly would consider paying someone to do it.
Excellent write up and detailed pics!!! I applaud you for the effort and ability to take pics while disassembling, Im a lil shocked those connectors werent soldered but kudos on sourcing them for us. Were there any complications on functionality?
These will need to be done. I think I might have to buy an extra unit and do the install so I don't have any downtime in the truck. Very nice write up also!!

Nope, was actually very easy, hardest part was figuring out how to get the Nav apart and together without breaking anything. :)
They weren't soldered cause the guy at customgadz said that it was the first time he has seen a different connector for the touch screens.

That was my original plan too (spare HU) but honestly it takes less than 2 hours to install everything inside the Nav unit, not sure what its worth to have the spare?

----------

Where can I get this done?!?
$1000 and you supply the parts I will ship you back everything installed.
