How reliable is the CTS?

Hi Guys,

Cadillac CTS or Infiniti G35?

Both 2004's.

I have narrowed down my choices for my upgrade from Acura Integra. Acura has been a fun little car but its about time I shed my 'ricer' image into something more professional and bit luxurious.

How reliable is the CTS? I will be looking at 2004 to 2005 CTS in Canada. I am not going for a 3 series BMW because I've not heard good reports on the reliability. Last thing I want to deal with is constant $ money down the drain.

Otherwise, I can possibly start looking at TL again?

My 04 with the 3.6 is just over 60K now. Runs great.
I have the 03 with 120k mile, still runs great and it's never left me stranded..When it's clean, it still looks like a $40 k car although it's worth $6k.
when i was lookin for a car last summer i was torn between a CTS and G35x
for me it came down to whichever car i found that wasnt a accident repair, after driving all over from burlington, mississauga, toronto, and barrie i finally found my 03CTS all origional body and paint. during the search i was lenining towards the CTS and i still havent driven a g35. i was also looking for a 04+ but i ended up with my 3.2L and im happy with it. my next car will most likely be another caddy but it will have awd.

The difference between the most reliable cars and average cars is minimal. When they produce the annual data for reliability its done on number of incidents per 1,000 vehicles, and on extra breakdown or failure per 1,000 vehicles might be alll that separates the good from the average.
Funny that you put the two togeter. I was torn with the same decision. I wound up going with the CTS.... May have been diffrent if I could have found a better price on a 2 door G35, But I'm overall pretty happy with my decision. My car runs great so far. I kinda feel like a G35 mas made to be beatin on by young/middle aged people, where the CTS was made for the middle aged/older crowd to just cruise in.

I've been tearing my apart with this decision for about a month now!

CTS looks 10x better than G35 Sedan (and I think its time to upgrade from a coupe). But after reading through 'head gasket issue' thread, it reminded me of my first car which was a GM which had horrendus head gasket issues.

However, I am not ignorant to think that a premium GM will have the same issues as a entry level J-Body.

LOL! I beat my CTS like a red headed step child and she LOVES it!
Well I had a coupe and if it rained at all the tail end would just slide everywhere you couldn't drive it in the rain or snow safely at all. I actually just sold it last friday to a 17 year old girl well actually her daddy bought it for her but still..........I give her 2 weeks till she totals the damn thing its her first car and one good rain and I bet it goes bye bye
buying used car=crap shoot
maybe you get a good one, maybe you get a bad one

just for the record:
1st gen G35=sport sedan
2nd gen G35=luxury sedan

also, these newer VQs have a stupidly narrow powerband

That was a problem with your right foot, not the car.

Its the newest VQ's that don't make it on Ward's 10Best list anymore, either...Id guess this has something to do with it...
The variations of the VQ35 seem to be the best regarded...

I agree... possibly shotty tires too. any car that can put down a decent amount of horse power to the wheels will will spin tires on wet pavement. traction control on helps too
So, whats the verdict folks?

I am used to not having blown gaskets, or $5000 brake jokes on my current Acura and I drive it like I stole it.

Should I go for a CTS? BMW folks told me to consider other cars besides BMWs if I am buying used.
The VQ30 was the pinnacle of the line. Something like 70% of peak torque available from 2500-6000 rpm.

But it's hard to market a torque curve. Much easier to market 300 peak hp.
I think in the long run, CTS is gonna be cheaper to own than anything German or Japanese. GM and Ford repair costs seem to be much cheaper than any import. My boss used to have a lexus RX. The water pump went, and they socked him for almost $1000. For a water pump.

Does that include a happy ending?
