Hmmmm, tough question. From one who has idled it a lot, I can say this. You could maybe go a day if you had a full tank of gas. Maybe 1/4 tank after 4-5 hours? So let's say in my experience, maybe under 1 gallon per hour.

Looking back on our 2005 hurricane evacaution where we spent half a day idling and crawling, I think I used about half a gallon per hour (or perhaps just slightly more) in a 2.7L V6 engine in my S4. An engine twice the size seems like it should use about twice as much, which would work out to your estimate of about a gallon per hour.

I agree, something very close to that. I idle a ton. I’ll leave it on a lot so it’s cool for our summers (Las Vegas). The idle should be very low. I’ve heard others say three or more, and I just don’t agree. It’s very very minimal.
