should it take a competent mechanic to install a new water pump on my 97 sts?,
also how much coolant is lost , I want to supply dexcool as I dont think my mechanic is a fan of dexcool.

Someone with the proper tools who has "been there-done that" could do the job in less than two hours. Possibly less than one hour (if the water pump cartridge is the ONLY issue).
....also how much coolant is lost ,
No more than 4 US quarts
....I want to supply dexcool as I dont think my mechanic is a fan of dexcool.
That fact alone would put me into DIY mode.

Yeah that ^^^

The 2002 book rate is 2.1 hours with a pump price of $86.

Hey Creeker,
When you are all done with the WP can you let me know the total cost of the job?
I am asking because I remember paying almost 5 years ago for the WP ~$500+$50 for a patch to the fuel line (I had the original nylon line at the time).
Just curious to see if is just me (or just us here in Ontario) or is the whole Canada the same. Anywhere in US I hear about a WP job is $250 or less.

I did one last year on a 99 deville took about 2hrs, very easy job would probably take me less than an hour now that I know how to do it
