well i bought my eldorado used and the both shifter and steering wheel where pretty messed up. so i found a cheap shifter and im going to get a steering wheel from another forum member. well anyways how can i prevent my new shifter from turning out like this?

The reason it looked like that actually varies by the driver. The oil on some people's hands is very acidic and will just eat away at things that they constantly touch, like the steering wheel. My uncles is one of those people and he has to have a cover on his steering wheel.

Do a search through Tech Tips, probably a month or two ago there was a thread about how to freshen up leather seats using an aerosol spray die that matches factory color, if it works on leather seats I don't know why it wouldn't work on leather wrapped steering wheels and similar items.
