Hello all,
Ive owned several newer STS models and always had the K+N air filter. But with my most recent purchase of a 99 Deville i noticed they dont list one. Tried to order the Edelbrock high flow unit but it was too small. I want to avoid a cone style intake that would be sucking in hot air. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Cadillacs of our vintage have very little to no aftermarket support. That being said, a good ol' fashioned paper filter will flow all the air the Northstar can take - and then some - at WOT.

Pick a good brand - I've seen Wix get good marks, and ironically ACDelco consistently scores at the top of the heap for airflow - run it, and check it periodically to see if it needs changing.

How's the DeVille? Got any pics? :D

The car already has more built-in cold air flow capability than the 4.6 (small) engine can handle, and modern panel filters are NOT restrictive. Use a good name brand of pleated panel filter (WIX, Fram, AC Delco, Purolator, PartsMaster, etc.) and avoid using any sort of oiled "filter'. Our MAF is extremely sensitive to oil contamination and is close to the filter panel itself.

Forget aftermarket cutesy "upgrades" - keep it clean and drive it like you stole it. Get deep into the FWD Northstar forums. The lights will come on.

For your pre-2000 (Very different) Northstar, study this......... written by one of the GM/Cadillac Northstar Systems powertrain engineers.

If you want to prove or disprove filter flow, use an OBD-II gauge instrument plugged into the test port. Observe MAP - Manifold Absolute Pressure (inverse of vacuum) - during full throttle acceleration runs (your car is speed limited to 112) and use the filter that gives you closest to MAP = MAX. (highest MAP = vacuum ~ 0)

You're fooling with an engine that is a tad smaller than a 1957 Chevy 283. The factory cold air intake duct and the intake manifold are relatively huge for your engine, so atmospheric pressure has no problem pushing air into the engine at WOT.

I use Wix. To answer your next question (based on a comment from Sub), the 112mph speed limiter is there because of the speed rating of the tires that came on your car. Don't know if anyone has cracked the computer on your year model. As CadillacLuke said, you won't find performance mods for your car that do anything appreciable for your car.

Just a few tidbits:

The SynthaMAX line uses a synthetic dry media, vs the older SynthaFLOW, which used mixed (oiled) cotton layers on top of a synthetic layer......

AEM and AirAid are both now subsidiaries of K&N.....

Remember, to get more air flow, you have to lessen the filtration. There is always a trade off. Which do you want more of and which do you need?

CadillacLuke and Rodnok couldn't have said it better.

a quality pleated paper filter is all you need -

you would gain absolutely ZERO - ZILCH - ZIP - NADA - NOTHING -
by using ANY "high performance" or "high flow" filters -
other than a little more DIRT in the engine -

Air flow - demand - is based on engine requirement, air pressure, and the opening of the throttle. The std air supply to the throttle design of this generation ensures that there is no additional opening constraint between the atmosphere and the throttle.
