Hey Guys, I Have A Bought A Cadillac Catera 1998 Abt 2 Years Ago. Currently The Km/s On The Car Is 118,024. In Last Winter, I Was Driving Normally, & Suddenly "Check Engine" Light Came On & The Car Started Vibrating; Loss Of Power In Pick-Up. After A Day Or Two It Went Away. This Went On For Couple Of Months; Back & Forth. Anyways I Finally Got The Car Scanned It Came Up With These Codes. "P0171, P0174 & P0336". I Narrowed It Down That These Codes Were For MAF Sensor & Crankshaft Sensor.
Well, I Changed The Crankchaft Sensor & Thoroughly Cleaned The MAF Sensor{Electronics Cleaner}. The Car Started Running Fine & Got The "Check Engine" Light Cleared. The "Check Engine" Light Came Back On After A While, Scanned It Again & Only The MAF Sensor Code Came Back On Which Didn't Bother Me Much Cuz There Was No Vibration & The Pick-Up Was Perfectly Fine; But Ever Since It Happened Back In The Winter; Everytime I Drive My Car For Longer Than Abt 10-12 Min, The Streering Got So Tight When The Brakes R Applied That I Couldn't Even Cut It. The Steering Is Also So Stiff At Low Speed Around 0-25 Km/s But Turns Fine At Higher Speed. It Literally Feels Like I'm Liftin' Up Weights, Whick Makes It So Hard To Parallel Park Or Turn After Stopping At An Intersection.
Also, Recently I Was At Canadian Tire To Get A Alignment On The Car, In The Pre-Inspection They Told Me That I Need To Replace Center Link{Arm} On It Too. Their Estimate Was Too High So I Left.
Well, What I Did Wanted To Know Is, The Main Problem With The Steering Turning So Tight Could Be Caused By What Exactly? Is It By MAF Sensor; Which I Didn't Replace Or By Center Link{Arm} Or Somethin' Else. Could Some1 PLS Help Me Out On This, Ever Since I Got This Car I Haven't Drove It For At Least 1 Month Straight Without Running Into Problems; Would Be Great Help If U Have Any Suggestions. Thanx In Advance.

Hitman your Variable Speed Proportional Power Steering is going/has gone out.....it is in no way related to your MAF Sensor.
You say the car steers fine for the first few miles or so... that indicates that it's something that needs to be up to operating temperature before the drivability complaint can be verified... if your PS Fluid doesnt need filling constantly then IMO its either your PS Pump, Control Valve in your Recirculating Ball Steering Gear, Recirculating Ball Steering Gear itself, or the Vehicle Speed Sensor for the Variable Speed Proportional Power Steering is somehow losing communication with the system...could also be caused by minor things such as air in your PS Fluid, Low PS Fluid, Slipping Belt...

Have it checked out..also why did the shop say you needed a new Steering Link?...was it Bent?..Scratched?..somehow indicative of an Impact that could have affected the rest of the Steering Components/System?..while a damaged or faulty Steering Link can cause significant problems, I dont think it's causing your Hard Steering.(or else it would steer hard ALL the time not 10-12 mins later)

IMO your problem is Fluid related. When the PS fluid warms up, the viscosity changes (it gets thinner), and is leaking past the seals in your Steering System; Internally or Externally.

Have the components inspected and replaced ASAP for Comfort and ease of operation(it is a Cadillac after all), or you could try some High Milage PS Fluid.(they have additives designed to swell the seals and get a few more miles out of it)

ToddTooFastForYou... I cannot believe that you wasted your time and this forums space with your comment.

This is an automotive help forum.

The last time i checked, correct spelling, punctuation, and grammer were not a requirement..

If you have nothing nice to say then please, by all means... STFU!!!

Hey, Guys, As I Have Mentioned In My Last Post Abt The Problem With My 98 Catera's Steering; Well, I Have Made An Appointment For A Steering Fluid Flush, So Let's See If That Helps The Problem.
Also I Have Jus' Purchased An OBDII Scanner & It Pulled Out These 4 Codes:

1: P0171 System Too Lean Bank 1
2. P0174 System Too Lean Bank 2
3. P0100 Mass Or Volume Air Flow Circuit
4. P0412 Secondary Air Injection Switching Valve A Circuit

If Some1 Could PLS Explain These 4 Codes In Detail, It'd Be GREAT Help.

I'm no expert - but if it was me, I would replace the MAF. From what I've read, cleaning it sometimes helps - but often only a short term solution. I could see that causing the first three, and maybe #4 also. Another possibility would be the O2 sensors. I've not had any experience in this area though, so these are just ideas.

Hitman ~ did you fix the steering issue? I'm having similar problem.

Enz - owns 1998 catera. The steering is very stiff when parallel parking, and while brake/turning. When acellerating and turning - powersteering is fine. Please provide the full term for "IMO" - what is this? And what is the MAF? I fixed my EBTCM for $200! - dealership wanted $1500! http://modulemaster.com/gmfaq.html fast turn-around too!

Additionally, my "airbag readiness light" is ON and was told I need a new SDM (Sensor Diagnostic Module)... discribed as a little black box under the dash area... Sound familiar to any of you? I replaced the P0501 speed sensor, front ASB/brakepad and crankshaft sensors, new valve job, an new transmission (why do I like this car so much)?

I thank you in advance hitman, steve420 & sirmqr

Hey, "Enz", The Term "IMO" Is Used For "In My Opinion". The Term "MAF" Is Used For "Mass Air Flow".
As For My Problem With The Steering, Well I Went To Another Mechanic & He Told Me That PS Pump Has Gone Out So I'll Be Getting That Changed Next Week. I'll Post Back The Results.

I Finally Got The P/S Pump Changed & That Fixed The Problem Right Away. I Can't Believe How Smooth The Steering Turns Now:thumbsup:.
Anyways, I Still Need To Change MAF Sensor, Does Any1 Knows Where I Can Find One, Hopefully In Canada. The # On The Bosch MAF Sensor Is 0 280 217 519.

Ok thank you. So, how does one flush the power steering fluid? Is there a release valve somewhere? My 1998 catera - had a very simialr issue with PS. I was told it could be an airgap in the fluid line...? and that I should try to flush the line and add new PS fluid first, before going to the dealership...

Ok so yours is fixed. Did the dealership do it or did you use an alternate shop? Did it cost more that $500?

I found some pumps online for:

A1 Cardone $166.59
Description: A1 CARDONE POWER STEERING PUMP, REMANUFACTURED -- The Highest Quality, Reliable, Direct Replacement Parts Available, Remanufactured To OE Specs Or Better, Core Charge Is Refunded When We Receive Your Rebuildable Old Pump

ARC $214.95
Description: ARC POWERSTEERING PUMP WITHOUT RESERVOIR -- A High Quality Direct Fit OEM Replacement Powersteering Pump

I'm Not Sure Where The Release Valve For PS Is Placed Since I Left The Car At The Garage & Picked It Up After It Was Done. But I Got The Job Done At A Private Garage; I'm Pretty Sure Dealership Would've Charged Me Over 700 Or 800 $'s. Instead For Reman PS Pump+Labor+Tax; I Ended Up Paying $290 CAD, Which I Think Is A Pretty Good Deal.
