All the sudden, I'm having a big problem with my Home Theater surround sound system.

My subwoofer is humming really bad.

It hums regardless if everything is turned off, and regardless if I unplug it from the receiver/amplifier.

The only way to stop the hum is to shut it off altogether (power it down).

I've had the system for several years without any problems. The humming just started a couple days ago.

It is so bad, I'm thinking about buying another subwoofer tomorrow morning in time for the football games.

Anyone have any ideas????

How old is the 'woofer?

The one on the stereo at my office is about three years old now, and it has a similar problem, so i just turned the woofer off......
Approximately 4 years old. It is a Definitive Technology subwoofer. Definitive Technology is supposed to be one of the top, exclusive speaker brands.

It sounded great. Real deep, thunderous bass. In fact, it still sounds great, but we just can't take the hummmmmmm when nothing is on.

Does the hum effect it when it is on?

Or is it un noticable?

Believe it or not, you really don't notice it when it is being used. That is the good news. It doesn't seem to effect performance.

However, when the system is off, nothing is on, it is really annoying.

HMmm less to worry about.

just sounds like a loose connection.

tke it to an audio guy and he'll probably find the fault and soulder it.

I just called them (the place where I bought it). They said to bring it in. A technician will look at it for me.

Update:

I took my subwoofer to the dealer this morning. It does require service.

While I was there, I bought a 2nd ProSub 80. So, when the first one comes back from service (is fixed), I'll have 2.

The new one will arrive from UPS on Tuesday. I can't wait. It will sound awesome when both are online.

I have a new problem now.
:(

I need to explain to my wife why we need a 2nd subwoofer.

She'll eventually figure it out, and see the credit card bill. But I'm not saying a thing this weekend.
