What does this mean when the message center reads "service air bag"?
what could be the problem(s)?

The computer module for the air bag system is direclty under the driver's seat underneath the carpet. If this module got really wet, it could have malfunctioned. This is what happened to me.

Does checking for codes reveal anything more detailed than the message center?

On Chrysler Sebrings, the plug often times comes lose under the Drivers or Passangers seats. Giggleing the plug solves the air bag light. Hopefully yours would be similar.

It depends if you'll get codes. If your module has gotten wet due to your sunroof's drain tubes getting clogged up and the water draining down on your floorboards, then you won't get any particular ACP codes because the airbag module that detects such codes has been terminated. Now if something has happend to the front sensor under your hood near the hood latch, then you would possibly get a detailed code saying so.

I have no sunroof. however, I will still check for wetness. Also, can I use a scantool for checking codes? Or do I have to go to the dealer for codes?

Press and hold down the "OFF and WARMER (red)" buttons simultaneously until your cluster panel lights up and then your codes will show up. Your air bag codes will be those that begin with "RO"
