Help, on vacation... Message on dash "Reduced Power to engine". CEL on.

Hello Folks

UPDATE - went to autozone and pulled the code, pulled a code P06DE, they say likely the oil pump. Light has turned off now.

Our 2014 Cadillac ATS Luxury 2.5 Non-turbo (187k miles, Maintenance meticulously) just popped up a message on the dash "engine power reduced" and now the CEL light is on. No weird sounds, no smell, no overheating, no leaks, and it happened while doing some routine driving. The bad thing is we are traveling and on vacation right now and need to drive home.

I know this is probably a generic alert message that could cover a myriad of issues. But I was wondering if there were some initial things I could look for or try while I try to find a place to check this out. Or how severe this message could be. Local Caddy dealership is booked up. One final note it is considerably hotter where we are currently are visiting.

Any input is greatly appreciated..

Most auto parts stores will pull the code(s), get them and post them here.

And from the manual, this isn't an "immediately critical" warning like a flashing CEL or low oil pressure message BUT NOTE the part where the power/performance may be further reduced after the next restart:

"ENGINE POWER IS REDUCED
This message displays when the
vehicle's engine power is reduced.
Reduced engine power can affect
the vehicle's ability to accelerate.
If this message is on, but there is no
reduction in performance, proceed
to your destination. The
performance may be reduced the
next time the vehicle is driven. The
vehicle may be driven at a reduced
speed while this message is on, but
maximum acceleration and speed
may be reduced. Anytime this
message stays on, the vehicle
should be taken to your dealer for
service as soon as possible. "

Thank you. I really didn't feel a performance difference, but voluntarily limped home. Calling OnStar now

If you had the oil and filter changed before your trip, perhaps incorrect one used. With 187k worth of bearing wear, oil that is too thin might cause pressure to drop in a hot area. I know M1 5w-30 years ago was almost in the 20 weight range, don't know about now.

If not that, I'd go for the oil pressure sensor before I'd jump to the oil pump like the Autozone guys. Sensor can probably be DIY, oil pump would be a bear. Also found this:

P06DE by itself for most engines indicates oil pressure is higher than commanded which is usually due to a faulty pressure sensor. But there is a curious Techlink article which indicates for these engines it could also have an associated low pressure code associated with it: Low Oil Pressure Condition on 2.0L and 2.5L 4-Cylinder Engines – TechLink

There is another bulletin associated with a piston oil squirter breaking or coming loose so clearly this code is also being used by GM to indicate pressure either low or high beyond commanded/expected value. Another reason vehicles ought to have an oil pressure gauge, my ATS is the only car I have owned not so equipped: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2014/SB-10070545-0335.pdf

As Angel71rs stated, go for the sensor first and if not the oil pump is more involved since this is a variable displacement pump.
