im a new guy here..so hi nice to meet all of the fellow catera owners on here...

ok heres my problem..about 3 weeks ago i traded my 98 honda civic for a 97 cadillac catera...i wish i would have read all of the stuff you guys warned about on the stickys before i made this choice..the reason i gave up my honda is because i was a two door coupe..and i am now a young father..so i needed four doors and a/c..
wel i got the car and for the first week everything was fine...never no check engine light lit up..or anything..the ride was smooth..and the tranny seemed fine..
then about a week and a half later the check engine lit up for about a minute then shut back off..at the time i didnt think anything of it..
i live in the great state of texas..so i had to get my car inspected...the guy at the inspection told me that my monitors werent responding right because the car had not ben driven for a while..and he was right..the car had not ben driven for a while...so i drove it for another week.. and then i took it back to him..and he told me that..the check engine light has to come on while the ignition is on.but the car is not runing yet..but my light does not light up...
so he told me to go get it checked..at a dealer ship.. i havent got a chance to go yet..but on the way out of the inspection place the check engine came back on for a few minutes then shut off again..so i KNOW the bulb is not blow..

so what can it be??? people tell me to check the circuit.
but if its already litten up before? just not in the ignition on stage why?
i need some help as sooon as possible i need the car to pass the inspection..thank you...

I wouldn't go to a dealership yet.....too expensive. Go somewhere like Auto Zone or Advance Auto and let them scan it and get the check engine codes so you'll know where to start. Last I checked Caddy here (NY) charges $75 an hour for labor and Auto Zone scanned mine for free. Good luck. Let us know what you found.

thank you...ill probably take it up there today..
I have a 1998 and mine did that. The light would come on for a little bit and then go off. I just had AutoZone scan and clear it. The problem was that I was putting regular unleaded in my car when it requires premium...ugh...I know! That was my problem...hope this helps you!
well guys all that came up was a evap code..so i changed the gas cap
but still no change..i think its a ECU problem..
anyone ever had this type of problem? how much would one cost?
What was the exact evap code?

Changing the gas cap wont always fix that... if its system related.
I have several post on this site regarding timing belt problems and now with the car fixed and running the "Check Engine" lite remains on at all times. The car (97 Catera) runs fine, smooth, does everthing. Had the local "Good Wrench" run the system and they mumble about having to spend time running the wiring. Nothing about "WHAT" the codes said was wrong. Now, my wife said today that on several takeoffs from stop lights there was a loud "Bump" when the tranny shifted. Is there some connection between the "Check Engine" and a "'Bump" in tranny shift?
Thanks.
i am guessing the bump she was hearing is the car miss firing and blowing the air out the intake. drive it to autozone they will read the codes for free also you can tell if it is the transmission or something else.

honda civics are gay anyway
:helpless: acctually i kinda miss my honda....
but thanks..alot guys.. im selling the cadillac..
i dont care for how much..so if any one knows any one in the houston area lookin for one let me know..
Since these cars are built by Germans they are not the easiest to diagnosis. My suggestion is to take it to a good Mechanic shop or dealer. Autozone can barely sell you the right part and you are going to trust them dianosising your car? I won't. I have a 97 Catera and I must say it's a fun car to drive and own. Mine has 66,000 miles on it but it's been well kept. Evap codes can be anything from a vaccum leak to a cracked switch. Well good luck with it.
If I wasn't all the way in NY I would definitely pick that up off you for parts... Then again if I didn't live in NY I wouldn't be stuck with this POS to begin with.
I put some fuel injector cleaner in the tank and my check engine hasn't been back on in 6 months. I wish the dealer had suggested that in one of the 6 times I asked them to check on it during other service.
