HELP - CTS wont START!!!

3429 Views 15 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  ssstealth
I have an 03 CTS 3.2L Manual transmission.

On monday i drove my car to an appointment. When i got back in my car after the 1-hour appointment i stuck the key in and tried to start it and the starter sounded normal and it cranked but the car wouldn't start.

It seems as if every time i tried to start it the starter would (sounding normal) crank for about 5-7 seconds even if i let go of the key. Regardless, the car would not start.

So i pushed the car out of the parking space (since its manual) and tried to start it again with no luck. the starter just kept winding (sounding normal).

For some odd reason i let it sit for 1 minute and tried again and it started right up.... and all of tuesday and even this morning it started right up, a couple times it seemed to take a little longer than normal judging by the length of time that the starter would wind before the engine started.

Fast Forward to 15 minutes ago. i went to go get lunch. The car started right up without hesitation and i went to go get some food. When i came out of the store i went to start it and the same thing happened as monday. The starter winds up (it almost seems like it sticks for 5 seconds and winds) and the car will not start. Everything sounds healthy but i get no startup...?

Yup...crank position sensor...cheap repair...parts and labor should be 100 or so.
Ah, maybe that explains why it started once i rolled the car out several feet?

what else could it be in case the CAS is not the problem? or are we all pretty sure that's what it is?
Its a common problem, mine happened around 120k I think 85miles on the clock or so.

Just curious, did you try to bump start it since its a manual?
i did not try to pop start it no.

its a common problem eh? my CTS only has 45k on it. still the car is 6 years old.

can you link me to a good CPS? how much should it cost?
I paid 20-30$ at the dealer. Putting it in I've heard
Isn't that bad, but the wire is a pain to chase. The
Sensor comes with a long wire and plug attached to it.
I had my caddy mechanic put it it...took him about 15 min
But he's probably done 100 of them lol.
It pluggs in by the oil filter housing.
Another job well done by your treasury men in action. (Most are probably too young to remember that from the police programs in the early 50s; that was the closing statement.)
ok,

Im going to the dealership to get it fixed today under warranty.

I need help in explaining, deos this sound like a good diagnosis?

The car has "not started" 6 times.

1. the car cranks fine and the starter sounds healthy
2. the starter cranks and sticks "on" for about 5 seconds but no start.
3. on 2 occasions, i rolled the car forward and it ended up starting
4. I read that a common problem on the 2003 CTS is a faulty Crank position Sensor.

the car will intermittently not start. Sometimes when it does start it cranks longer than usual as if the starter is wearing out.

Is there anything else you guys have heard (common) of being a cause for why a CTS wouldn't start (takign into account my situation?

Thanks dudes!

Had it happen once on our 06.Plug for sensor had oil all over it .Pulled plug off, cleaned it with brake cleaner, then blow off with compressed air.Has worked flawless for 3 months now.
plug for sensor? the crank pos. sensor?
Just to confirm, I had this problem about a month ago and replacing the crank position sensor fixed it.

It was a $248 repair at my local auto shop.
I would like to thank those who took the time to answer this post. I found this post after a quick search when my friend's 03 CTS 3.2L would not start. She was in a panic and I was the hero. Onstar reported a P2107 which turned out to be a dead end and there is no telling what the closest dealer 40 miles away would have charged for the tow. BTW, Onstar REALLY wanted to tow the car in... I had to practically beg for them to just read the DTC to me.

Anyway, 45 minutes and the car fired right up. From looking at other posts, we hope this will also solve the intermittent "Starting Disabled - Remove Key" condition that the dealer can not solve.
Even though I was apart of the above, that is why we're here. Besides, doesn't onstar provide free towing? I don't know what the milage is though. I only know this because my insurance agent, of all people because she made a sale, asked me if I had onstar. I said yes and why, she said "well you'll get a discount due to the fact it could be tracked and the free towing they provide."

I called onstar and they do provide towing, but like I said I don't know how far. Of course it's to a caddy dealer.

If the CPS doesn't fix the "Starting Disabled" problem, start a new Post to see if someone has that problem.
I actually started a thread for this about 2-1/2 years ago:

http://www.cadillacforums.com/forum...2003/101324-starting-disabled-remove-key.html

It has only happened to me twice while I was driving, but it is not my car so usually I just hear about it. Sometimes it will go for months witout happening so of course there is virtually no way for the dealer to find it. They did replace several thing under warranty and then finally blamed it on the K&N air filter system. We changed that back to stock but that did not fix it.

The car is at 193,000 miles now so warranty is obviously out. The thought of putting it on a hook though is still agonizing. I really hate when the dealer just throws $300 darts at the problem and still doesn't fix it.
