Ok my car the other day just started leaking coolent bad. I went to put more in and heard a loud rush of collent comming right back out. So with the help of my son I used a flashlight and poured some water in and sure enough it came right back out from a round hole about a inch wide right behind the water pump belt. It looks like there was something there at a time but now its missing. kind of lower from the main cog. This is a BIG problem is this where a freeze plug should be cause theres no room for a heater hose to be there. ALL help will be apprciated. And is this a easy fix or should i pony up the 300$++ for a mech?

That's a freeze plug and it's just pressed in, but that may be hard to do looking at the space you have available.
sweet now I know where to start.

i would buy a new one also
you answered my question before I asked it. Thanks

does any one know if I how I can get at it?

would removing the waterpump housing be able to access it?
What engine are you talking about? Kind of looks like a Northstar. If it is, removing the crossover (water pump housing) may be the only way, but it is a royal PITA. I would try everything possible before attempting that.

sorry should have mention it's a northstar.

tomorrow I'm gonna pick up 2 freeze plugs. the first one I'm gonna try without removing anything. and if that doesn't work I'll remove the crossover.

Thanks guys.

I appreciate all the help. it's actually really nice to be back on the caddy forums. even though this one isn't mine. but I'm sure the gf will get me to do all the work on it
WOW. Those things can just fall out?? I thought they screwed in. I had the "freeze plugs" replaced on my Chrysler at 50,000 miles because they were leaking. But they had to take the whole engine out of the car to get to them.
They are not screwed in, they're pressed in. Generally when they leak it is from poor cooling system maintenance and they rust through.
you weren't kidding when you said the crossover is a pain in the ass. I came to the conclusion that it cant be removed without removing the tranny.

so I'm now attempting to make enough room to put it back with the crossover in place. I've removed the tensioner. and there is quite a bit of space now for me to work

but I was wondering if anyone knows how to remove the top pulley. that would give me enough space to fit my hand in.

thanks

EDIT: nevermind, I found it. gotta go pick myself up a power steering pulley remover
all that work to replace that little cap. I hope i can find an easier way.
Use a new plug. As I mentioned it may be accessible removing the coolant pump. The x-over removal is a job that is quite involved.

They do make rubber expansion plug that can cinch up tight with a nut & bolt. I couldn't say if clearence is at issue.
