BLEW MY TRANSMISSION THE OTHER DAY, AND IM REALLY STRESSED. I HAVENT HAD IT LOOKED AT YET, SINCE IT WONT MOVE NOW. THE PRICES IVE BEEN HEARING THO, ARE BETWEEN $2,000 AND $4,000. THE DTS HAS ABOUT 75,000 ON IT.

WHAT HAPPENED:
ABOUT 1 WEEK AGO, THE TRANNY STARTED SLIPPING WHEN I FIRST PULLED AWAY FROM A DEAD STOP. IT WOULD ALSO SOMETIMES SLIP LIKE A MANUAL DOES WHEN YOU HAVE SOMEONE WHOS REAL SLOW LETTING THE CLUTCH OUT WHEN I PUT IT IN REVERSE, AND ITS AN AUTOMATIC.

FINALLY, A FEW DAYS LATER I GOT SERVICE TRANSMISSION ON THE DASH, AND I MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO GET IT LOOKED AT. WELL IT DECIDED TO GIVE UP THE GHOST 2 DAYS BEFORE I WAS GOING TO GET IT LOOKED AT.

I WAS COMING HOME ON THE FREEWAY, HAD THE CRUISE CONTROL SET AT ABOUT 70. WENT UP A HILL, SO THE MOTOR SLAMMED ON THE GAS TO MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE, AND THATS WHEN IT MADE A HARD SHIFT, AND I SMELLED THE TRANNY BURNT UP. :banghead: I WAS ONLY A MILE OR TWO FROM HOME, SO I JUST WANTED TO TAKE IT ALL THE WAY THERE WITHOUT STOPPING, STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN BEFORE I MADE IT HOME, AND IT TOOK ABOUT 6,000 RPMS JUST TO GET THE CAR ROLLING, AND IT WOULDNT GO PAST 15 MPH AFTER THAT. I MADE ONE MORE COMPLETE STOP, AND NOW ITS PRETTY MUCH LIKE BEING IN NUETRAL WHEN IM ACTUALLY IN DRIVE. LIFTED THE HOOD, THERE WAS TRANNY FLUID EVERYWHERE, AND THE UNDERCARRIAGE WAS DRIPPING FROM EVERYWHERE TOO. HAD TO PUSH IT INTO ITS PARKING SPOT SO I PUT IT IN NUETRAL, AND IT WOULDNT ROLL BACKWARDS...

ALL I WANT TO KNOW IS HOW SEVERE THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE. IM HOPING THE BEST:cloud9:, BUT EXPECTING THE WORSE.:lildevil:

HERES A PICTURE... SHES MY BABY

Nice house! There are lots of trans. on ebay.
Also, what year and model trannys are gonna be compatible with my 2000?
I know for the most part 00-05 are the same cars, and dts and devilles are the same. But im not so sure when it comes to mechanical issues such as a tranny.
I'm replacing mine right now in a 2002 base Deville - I got my tranny for $400 with 70,000kms (about 43,000 miles) on it. I'm attempting the R&R myself, but I've find many mechanics here in Canada willing to do it for 400-500. I also had huge quotes when i first started shopping around $3000-4000. Don't panic man ... Just shop it around!!
Mine cost me $3200 to rebuild. They're not cheap and I wouldn't waste my money on a used trans. It's to much labor to change it.

I can almost guarantee you though that those insanely large wheels lent a hand in the premature failure. Think about the physics behind that. Once you increase the overall wheel diameter you're multiplying the stress on the drive-train big time.

Think about putting a 10 speed bike in 10th gear and trying to take off. Think about the stress on that chain as you force your weight onto it to get moving. That's what you're doing to your transmission.
I'd be really suprised if my wheels had that much to do with premature death of my tranny. Ive only had them a couple hundred miles. Plus the overall diameter barely changed at all. With the bigger wheel comes a smaller tire, if you only seen a silhouette of the two, theyre not different by much at all...
Don't forget when you're looking for a replacement transmission: Your car, a DTS, has a 3.71 final drive and that's what transmission has to go back in.

If there's fluid all over the place and a burnt smell, you're in big overhaul bucks. Unless you have a good shop with a lift and a slew of tools, plus a real Helm/GM Factory Service Manual, have a local shop do it, NOT AAMCO !!!
Understood, I could be wrong but they look huge overall. Was it leaking before this slipping problem? Did a leak go unnoticed causing you to run low on fluid?

Why not aamco? I ask, because i did look at their website last night, and was seriously considering giving them a call...
With that said, does anyone have an automotive repair company they would suggest i take it to?
Its no longer under warranty, but my first decision was to call a dealership. Just tryin to get some ideas to save money. Im considering selling it after i get the transmission repaired and would like to not take a huge loss.
Because there are over 900 moving parts inside a 4T80E and most shops are no where near equipped to deal with it. I saw mine apart.

My transmission guy dedicated his entire workbench to mine because he needed that much room to lay it out.

It's a pretty serious task, not like the old days. Much like the N*, the transmission that goes with her is just as complex.
ZsaZsa Gabor may have sold a lot of AAMCO repairs, but that doesn't mean they know squat about transmissions...........

"Hey, Joe......does this look OK to stick back in this tranny ?" ..... "Yeah, stuff it in: He'll never know......."
How much do you want for it with the tranny blown?? Tow it to Ontario.
how much do you want for it with the tranny blown?? Tow it to ontario.
you figure how much it is to tow to ontario, and we can haggle from there... Haha, im not gonna be able to tow it... Im military buddy, id have to burn up leave for that, and i cherish my leave!
haha no doubt!! I'm sure it's not worth my time or yours. Put a used tranny in it. Get it up for sale. It's really not that expensive!
