Has anyone tried Diablo tuning for our cars?

I've worked on vehicles that have been "tuned" with those. And my tuner expert has had experience with those and with other "tune in a box" type devices like that.

The one you linked is 50 states legal (even in CA, where it is CARB approved and has an EO #). That means it really doesn't do much. If you're running weird tire sizes, or you've changed the final drive gears, that one can fix your speedometer. It can also adjust cooling fan operation. If you're hitting the rev limiter a lot or hitting the electronic speed limiter, it can adjust (remove) those feature as well. And finally, it can make some adjustments to shift mapping for the transmission.

It won't adjust the base fueling maps, the base ignition maps or the VVT maps. It can make minor adjustments to WOT fueling (possibly only in the lean direction from stock, I don't remember).

Whether or not it's useful depends on the mods you've done to your engine and drive line. Like I said above, it'll do simple stuff like correct the speedo for alternate gears/tires and adjust cooling fan operation. It won't let you do enough to compensate for MACE cams and tuned headers or anything like that.

With any of the "tune in a box" devices, always ask the seller/maker if the device "locks" your PCM so that it can't be programmed by other tuners. If it does, avoid it like the plague. One of the "features" listed for that one is "One-time unlocked PCM cross shipment" and I'd want to know exactly what that means. If you use one of those that locks the PCM and then take it to a professional tuner, the tuner will need a fresh PCM in order to do anything. I think some of them lock it to the point where even the dealership can't restore the firmware with the factory original stuff.

Thanks for the input Racer-X...As a Apt dweller, we're not allowed to work on our cars in the parking lot (besides cleaning or changing a tire...minor stuff), I have the basic 3.6 DI LFX motor, K&N and Borla muffler system. I wanted to give Will OverKill a chance, but he doesn't answer emails....which leaves Trifecta...but they don't allow any mods, like 80mm TB or pro-charger (my be my next year project) . I just want my girl to be quicker. I haven't reach the speed limiter!!! 140 and she was still trying to pull  ...but my heart and nerves said slow down idiot. She was staring to get loose on the rails. i'm not running performance tires, 18" OEM Michelins.

I doubt that Diablo device will do anything useful with a bigger throttle body. I know it won't help with any kind of forced induction.

The fine print, once you select the engine (3.6L, gas), includes this: "Power Level 2 (91 Octane Performance Tune): 8 HP, 9 TQ "

My dyno tuning guy charges about $50 over that discounted CarID price for a dyno tune on any LSx V8 (including whatever mods you've done). He pulled well over 400 WHP out of the LS1+mods powered 1978 Datsun "570Z" I helped build with a friend. I'm not sure if he does HFV6 engines, but those will probably be more.

That's too much $$$ for such a small increase. They say "the 50-state inTune i3 is not CMR compatible", what is CMR?

CMR is a custom tune. I can't remember what CMR stands for, but in DiabloSport speak, if you use this device, you can't do a custom dyno tune over and above the tune you get from this device. That makes me even more nervous because that may mean that it locks/encrypts the PCM data so that only this device can work with it.

Here is a horror story of a guy owning a 2008 Corvette that contacted me as I do custom tuning

He had an EVS supercharger he wanted me to install, and it came with the Diablosport tuner pre programmed
and was told by the vendor he MUST use those tunes to warranty the EVS SC'er

It is what I call a "canned"/ "cookie cutter" tunes meaning they are not custom tuning for each vehicle's needs,
nor for the elevation, type of weather of gas type used and driver style
Most large sellers of products like this are in fear the feds will wack them for violating smog rules, so the tuning changes made are limited.

In this case once the SC'er was installed the tune for the PCM and TCM (auto tranny) was installed, and the owner took it for a testdrive
Engine ran lousy once boost kicked in and the tranny would from idle and started moving would go right to 4th gear at low speeds.

Using my OBD-II scanner found the timing, and fuel mapping all wrong and getting odd results from the tranny PIDS.

The car drove so bad the owner had to get a tow truck to take to the dealer, who found that the Diablosport forced flash the wrong calibration in the TCM.

Being the Corvette was new and under GM warranty, GM void the power and drive trains, charged the owner over $4,000 (plus his as a core) to replace the tranny and the TCM as that tuner product locked something they do not own

I then tuned both TCM and PCM and Corvette with boost still runs great 5 years later
Diablosport admitted it was their fault but never paid for the damage, costs or loss of GM warranty :(

Anyone having a tune done should require the tuner to in writing that they did NOT lock the controllers.
Imagine going on a road trip, vehicle has a problem, so you need to go to some dealer/shop for them to
find controllers are locked and force you to pay and replace them, which I have seen happening to others

To get the best gains, best fit for the mods installed and to fit the driver's drive style really requires a custom tune where the guy doing the tuning is his sole business and knows exactly how to do the tune so that vehicle still passes smog testing, does not trip DTCs and vehicle performs well while in most case will also increase the fuel mileage.

One of my worries is that here in PA, we have yearly state & emissions inspections. i would like to be able to reflash back to the original tune to pass. Thanks for the info (and warning!).

Sorry not trying to talk over peoples heads, but I have been tuning since 1994 and all this is second nature for me

This is not the whole list below just for Cadillacs, but ones I know of offhand
As I tune most GM vehicles that have gas engines

This can be done via emails and the person who has the vehicle needs a OBD-II scanner that records while
they drive, and they email that to me, so I then know exactly what each vehicle is doing and how I bias the tune
for the engine and the auto tranny if it has one to include elevation the vehicle is at, type of mods installed, age of vehicle, weather, gas used and how the owner drives it.

Then needs a flash tool that allows the owner to save the original GM calibrations and the tunes I email them
to flash in to the PCM and/or TCM (engine and auto tranny)
This requires having the use of a laptop that uses MS Windows OS.

What is your turnaround for tunes?
I know the Colorado 3.6 guys seem to use Trifecta almost exclusively. I have an HP Tuner with E85 kit and Will's tuning but he is so busy it is hard to get anything within a reasonable time. I really need to have my tune updated.

I can't speak for cts tuning, but I previously had a g8gt with the 6L, and tuners such as this really couldn't improve on the stock engine tune, but was pretty good with the transmission. Was able to firm up shifts and adjust shift points. You could make changes just to the sport mode if you wanted to. Now that I think about it, I was using the cortex super chips tuner. Eventually made the move to hp tuners that opened up a lot more ability.
