Well, we are on the eve of the first snow in the Philly area and I was wondering how my fairly new GS D3s will do in the snow? I fully realize that the V, even with real snow tires, doesn't like the snow, but I am wondering if I will be completely outta luck trying to drive in a few inches of snow with the GS D3s.....thanks in advance for any input.

I had GS D3s on my SS Camaro. I drove it once in the snow. It was, uh, exciting. They really are summer tires. The tread LOOKS like it might be ok in the snow, but it ain't.

Thanks guys...WhiteLightning is hooking me up with his 4 old wheels and I likely will bite the bullet and get the snows....we got about 1-2 inches last night . . . it could be a long and snowy winter! My wife thinks I should unretire my 96 Impala from seeing any snow....but I have avoided it for almost 10 years, and I am not starting now!

East Central Iowa. Have 8 in inches of snow. The V Car was at the dealer for mounting GS D3s. The service parking lot had been plowed, leaving a surface of snow and ice. In first gear, just spinning, no forward monentum. Second gear, slip sliding. Started in third gear, a slow slipping movement that finally provided forward motion. My wife drove my Jeep home. Parking the V untill the roads melt clear. I have driven the V with the original F1 Run Flats comfortably in snow. OK when careful. The GS D3s are not so drivable. Next purchase: wheels and actual snow tires.

As a canadian who just got an 05 CTS-V I'm gonna heavily recommend snow tires. The GS D3's are hype in the summer but you don't even want to try that mess in the snow/ice. I have my snow tires going on this week but I had to keep them on the stock wheels much to my chagrin since extra wheels that fit over those lovely 14 inch rotors would be another grand (canadian) on top of the 800 bucks for the tires. That said I've heard of this stuff you can spray over your wheels to protect them in snowy months. It's only $25 bucks a bottle, may be worth a shot.

GS D3's = suicide in snow/ice. Actually, you can't get enough traction to actually get the car up to full ramming speed without spinning out. So in some ways they are pretty safe...

If you can actually SEE snow on the roadway, in any quantity, you are screwed. With the stock tires or GS D3's, the CTS-V is limited to (literally) about 5 mph or less depending on where you are and the type of snow. If there are hills in your area, you are most likely not getting the car home that day. Park it, call someone with a Camry to come get you...

Trust me, I know.

i'm running Blizzak LM22s and in the 3 inches of snow that MA got today, the car did really, really well. our other all season car is an fx35 on all seasons. even with AWD, the fx35 can be dicey. with the snow tires, the V stopped really well. stabilitraK does a good job of keeping the car pointed in the right direction.

snow tires really make it manageable. i was pleasantly surprised.

Did something change with Tire Compounds / Cars in the last few years? When my '90 Vette was 'relatively' stock and putting down ~350ft lbs, I drove in the snow on 275/40-17 Eagle GS-C's all the time. The car drove fine. Granted I could powewrslide at will but it was completely functional, even at highway speeds. Actually got pulled over and yelled at from a cop because I was doing 40 on the highway and passing people. He said my car handles like sh!t in the snow and I shouldn't be passing anyone. He didn't like the fact that I said it would out handle his and proceeded to follow me the next 5 exits to see if I did anything he 'didn't like'. :histeric:

Anywho, the point is, that was ~5 years ago. Now it seems like everyone I know with a BMW (!X), Mercedes (!4matic), Infiniti (!X), etc. can't even get their cars moving in ~1-2 inches of snow. You would think with all the electronic 'nannys' they have nowadays it would be easier not harder to drive in the snow.

Are the tire compounds getting worse?
