Just filled her up with premium and what a difference. At idle and around town she seems a lot smoother yet at speed a WOT she's much more responsive.

I don't think it's placebo effect because I was really skeptical about it. You usually see more drastic changes like this with carbureted vehicles, not modern fuel injected ones.

Then again 87 is 2.46 right now and 91 is 2.69... I'm usually not one to use premium... maybe I'll try mid-grade next time and find a happy medium.

Either way I'm impressed.

You may pay a little more for the premo stuff, but youll get better mileage and its better for the engine. At least with mine Im willing to spend the extra $2-3 per fillup, and get about 28mpg rather than 25 with the reg.

In the end it pays to use the good stuff. Not sure with the new N* tho.

Right there with ya. I have tried 87 and 89 octane. Both make the car respond slower and I get less MPG. It's definately better to go premium. I get 28MPG or more on the Hwy with 91 octane and around 25 with 87 octane. In the end it's just a wash with cost vs MPG, so why not go premium?

I agree also but I don't ever bring this up because of all the bashing the topic gets. I definitely notice a difference in the cars reaction with premium.

stop complaining about gas prices. .
we have the short end of the stick
1 litler =1.00-1.10 depends where you are
4liters =1.005 gallons
we would pay about $4.40 CND or 4.31 US for the same product which your getting for what 2.49 ?

Assuming a $.20 diff between reg and prem and assuming you got a 3 mpg increase using the good stuff, the extra cost would be a wash.

Not only that but gasoline is one of the cheapest things we buy by volume.

What do you pay for milk ?

Gasoline is Cheap
Think a gallon of gas is expensive? This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective.
Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 ..... $10.32 per gallon
Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 ..... $9.52 per gallon
Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 ..... $10.17 per gallon
Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 ..... $10.00 per gallon
Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 ..... $33.60 per gallon
Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 ..... $178.13 per gallon
Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 ..... $123.20 per gallon
Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 ..... $25.42 per gallon
Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 ..... $84.48 per gallon

And this is the REAL KICKER: Evian water 9 oz $1.49 ..... $21.19 per gallon?! $21.19 for WATER - and the buyers don't even know the source. So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, Whiteout, or God forbid Pepto Bismal or Nyquil.

I wish my car ran on water. $21/gal Evian is a choice, and not a very good one at that.

So see that's why gas is less than half of all others things. Because of the volume we use.

Now you're talking.
One of my cousins has done this with an old MB 240D that he picked up just for that purpose. It really is amazing, ever since I try to keep an eye out for a cheap 240 or 300 (that's probably the only way I'd ever buy an MB!)

Although I'd be hard pressed to decide whether I'd want my car to smell of french fries or mexican food!

I would be happy to pay the extra cost for premium fuel if I noticed a difference in either mileage or performance;
but I simply don't experience a difference. I've kept strict records on long-distance (6000 miles) trips, using same highways for both grades of gasoline, and have seen zero difference. Performance differences are more subjective (for me, at least, since I don't have sophisticated equipment) but I am totally unconvinced that I feel any difference in power or responsiveness when I use premium versus standard grade.

So, I'm glad for you guys who feel you're getting something for your extra $$$, but I just haven't found it to be so.

My mileage increase alone pays the extra cost....

And the car runs way better.

Back when gas was 99 cents, the 20-cent difference was 20%. Now, the 30 cent difference is 10%.

Purchase the fuel that your owners manual requires.
A fill up on my 64 Lincoln (24.5 gal) used to cost me less than $5.00 for premium. There probably were 5 or 6 gallons in it when I arrived at pump.

Actually, price was 27.9 as I recall. 15 mpg on road; 10 in town. Smoothest car you could image. Slow as a VW, however. Engine weighted a ton--430 cubes. By the way, wipers were hydraulic, working off a pump on front end of crankshaft. Those pumps are worth hundreds today. Sorry for stealing thread, but I haven't had a chance to steal anything else today.
