I have a 2005 STS and the glove box will not open. I am thinking that either the cable came off of the latch or the plastic latch broke. Is there another way to get the glove box open?

It could be the latch is broken. It's not the cable as there is no cable.

Assuming my '06 base model has the same box & latch as your car, it doesn't look promising to get it open with finesse.

Leave the car unlocked down by the liquor store. The glove box will be open in no time.
