So I noticed tonight that the hood of my car was slightly askew. So, I pop the hood and see my oil cap sitting on the fuse box. It seems I forgot to screw it back on.

Give me a dollar and I’ll teach you my secrets of coolness.

Bah.

Heh. Now I have oil all over. Oil level is still fine, though. I'm not worried, but thought I would ask to be safe.. This incident didn't put my engine in any danger did it. Minus the possibility of crud falling in the nice gapng hole.

Poke fun... You know you want to :hide:

Id like to poke fun! But ill hold back knowing its a mistake and stuff like that happens to us all. Right guys?
But seeing as your level was fine I dont see any reason why it would damage anything. Might want to check the belts and make sure there isnt oil all over them. And clean up of course.
Take care and keep that cap on!

If it had enough oil to lubricate inside of engine, then should be okay. I know someone that took car to dealer for oil change, they forgot to put the new oil in it. He demanded a new engine, and they did.

Jiffy Lube did that to me, left the cap off of my 84 Nissan Sentra. I drove for 50 miles before finding it. Oil was everywhere. I made them clean it up, got a few free oil changes afterwards. Engine still ran great up to day I sold it, about 100k mile later.

Simple Green spray might help.

Did you not notice that the engine idled roughly and maybe studdered maybe just a bit when accelerating? When you leave the cap off it creates a "gap" in the EGR/PCV system and some engines will just not run at all while the cap is absent. Just curious, I haven't actually tried this on my N*, so I really don't know if it had/has this effect like some other GM motors. Thanks.

You should be fine. I wouldn't worry about it unless the engine starts running rough. Just top off your oil, keep the cap on from now on and you can clean up the mess by simple using a garden hose with a pistol grip nozzle on your COLD engine. It will clean the oil, dirt and loose grease off very nicely. When you are done take her out for a nice drive to warm things up and dry her off.

I did not really notice any change in engine performance aside from a loss in mileage, which I'm going to hope was do to the cap being off.

Thanks for all your replies! I will probably spray the bay down with some simple green then take a low pressure garden hose after it then.

Well I almost forgot.. (Imagine ME forgetting something)... Happy Thanksgiving!
