Every once in a while the shifter indicator stays blank after starting the vehicle. Many times it will come on after a little while, but recently we went the entire trip without it.

Anyone else have this issue?

Any fixes or guesses as to how to fix?

Thanks!

Sounds like a problem with the selector switch on the shift lever itself. I know on my 03 when I pull down to shift the little bar disappears momentarily, so its probably something to do with that sensor/switch.

I think he means the part of the IPC that lights up and shows you what gear you're in. If that isn't turning on, it's most likely a short/loose wire in the IPC.

Maybe a slight linkage adjustment, just a guess, does moving the shifter make any difference while the problem is happening?

Moving the shifter lever around didn't do anything. Same deal with jiggling the key around in the ignition. Nothing.

All other gauges seem to work fine - just can't tell for sure which gear I'm in.

As far as the IPC goes, are there instructions on how to pull the gauge cluster off and monkey with that? I fixed a dead tachometer by doing that on a Chrysler Cirrus one time.

It sounds as if the Nuetral Start/ Backup switch is corroded or failing. It is bolted to the transmission where the shuft linkage is connected. It is a very common failure on my pickup trucks with the diesels (vibration?). Typically, the gear display will not light, but on occasion, the truck will not start or will shift weird, or will stay in second gear. Removing your instrument panel will not help. The switch is relatively inexpensive and usually comes with alignment instructions. A Tech II scanner (your dealer has one) will allow testing, although the diagnostics will most likely cost more than changing the part.

notny,

I am having the exact same problem with my 2002 Escalade. The shift indicator (and, in my case, the odometer too) used to turn off and on randomly. Sometimes I could restart the car and it would illuminate. In the past two months it stopped working altogether. I have not found a solution yet. I noticed that you posted this question in January of 2007. Have you found a solution yet?
