2009 DTS

I got a new garage door opener. On the old opener, the DTS middle button worked fine.

Now I cannot program anything. I have the manual, and also look at Youtube.
Push 1 and 3 button, for 5 seconds to clear, then push one button and use remote to program that car "garage" button.
Then program garage door opener while holding the car button down.

NOTE: I did have somewhat of a problem programming the 2014 XTS, but I got it after 3 tries.

Any other ideas? We are using the remote button that you hide over the visor, but I'd like to just push the button above the mirror.

Yes. I used the same procedure that worked on my 2014 XTS ( but I had to try 3 times here)
But, it seems that the 2009 car is not picking up the signal from the remote control.
I suspect that I am not doing something like setting the 2009 car to receive the signal from the remote.

New garage door openers use an updated protocol and won't be compatible with the older signal coming from your car's console. You can buy a translator box that can pair with the new opener and the box will then convert your older signal into an appropriate command for the new garage door opener. I don't remember who was the OEM for the box in the DTS -- I dropped the issue and just used the transmitter that came with my new garage door opener.

Here's the procedure out of 2011 owners manual to program a rolling code opener.

1. From inside the vehicle, press the two outside
buttons at the same time for one to two seconds,
and immediately release them.

2. Locate in the garage, the garage door opener
receiver (motor-head unit). Locate the “Learn”
or “Smart” button. It can usually be found where
the hanging antenna wire is attached to the
motor-head unit and may be a colored button.
Press this button. After pressing this button,
complete the following steps in less than
30 seconds.

3. Immediately return to the vehicle. Press and hold
the Universal Home Remote button that will be
used to control the garage door until the garage
door moves. The indicator light, above the selected
button, should slowly blink. This button may need
to be held for up to 20 seconds.

4. Immediately, within one second, release the button
when the garage door moves. The indicator light
will blink rapidly until programming is complete.

5. Press and release the same button again. The
garage door should move, confirming that
programming is successful and complete.

I had the same problem with the 2010 I bought about 4 months ago. Never was able to program it. Check this thread. Maybe there is some advice that will help. Start at post #4.

New (To Me) DTS

I scored a one owner 2010 DTS with only 20,800 miles on it. I'm gonna miss that White Diamond '03 DHS. Guess Ill be spending some time here to see what I can learn about it.

BINGO !!! well the bad news is I got so excited, I forgot exactly what I really did, but the following is similar to what 00 Deville said.
This is my take.. ( that I can remember).

1) Press both 1 & 3 buttons on the upper console for 2 seconds. When you release the buttons, the little console lights will be blinking
2) Press "learn" on garage door opener, a little light will be flashing on the opener. ( best to have the car right in the garage, so you can hop back to the car quickly)
3) get back in car and hold remote garage door opener next to upper console and press and hold remote button and console button that you want to use.
4) garage door will close. I held the buttons down for about 5- 10 seconds.
5) When I tried to open the door using the car button, it didn't work the 1st time, but when I pressed the console button the 2nd time, it worked.

Looking back, I think what I was doing wrong was not programming the car buttons WHILE the upper console lights were blinking.

What brand of opener did you get? I know that I had to get one other "box" for my Liftmaster to work with 2009 vehicles I have. This was some time ago so I can't recall exactly what it was but will see if I have an email/receipt.

Got a Genie from Home Depot. But like I said, everything is working fine now.
Just the instructions were not very clear.

OK, thanks. I can't find the name of the extra unit I had to purchase but it was for a Liftmaster model.
