Prior to my current FWD XTS, I had 2 STS's. The first STS was RWD and the 2nd one was AWD. Prior to that, my previous 4 Cadillacs were FWD and I always had great traction. I do live in California so snow is not a huge factor but I do live only about an hour and half away from a great ski resort where I had driven all of the FWD Cadillacs to with no problem. When I got my first RWD STS, I didn't think too much about because I didn't think I needed AWD but as powerful as that car was, the RWD was VERY squirrely in wet or snowy conditions. It really surprised me in just rainy conditions. Many a time that car would fishtail because of the wet road conditions and I even got into a little accident going around a freeway onramp when it was raining. Never had that problem with FWD. When looking for my 2nd STS, I definitely put AWD on the top of the feature list and what a difference it made. That car was very sure footed and I never had any conditions where I fishtailed. Looking for this XTS, I did want a platinum AWD but it came down to 2 cars. One was AWD and the other FWD but I liked the color more on the FWD so I went with that because all of my prior Cadillac FWD experiences had been great and again, I do live in California where the winter conditions are not too bad but I have driven the car to the snow in Lake Tahoe and it drove like a champ.
I guess it all comes down to where you live and how severe the conditions are!
