Filled up my 2002 last night (new to me truck) and this morning I can smell gas. I didnt over fill or so I thought, but this morning I see some drips of gas hanging off the bottom of the tank. Long story short, picked up the truck 2 weeks ago from a repo auction, gauge said it was empty, it's been parked since I had the tow truck drop it off, I go to put fuel in it last night ( that's how I realized the gauge was bad, it was more than 3/4 full) and now this morning I have a little gas dripping. Common for the fuel fill neck to dry out/crack? I dont think I over filled it.

Also have to figure out how to diagnose a bad sending unit vs a bad gauge motor.

Top of fuel pump or its seal. Same for me .You have to drop the tank to check so now would be a good time to replace the fuel pump. You will need to replace the pump some day. I think we all have.

Awesome. Glad I filled up beforehand. This is how I caught on to the truck sitting for a very long time before I purchased it. This morning when I smelt the fuel, it was super fuckin old fuel. It jives with the paperwork of this truck sitting in repo for 3 years.

I also would not count out that the stepper motors in your dash cluster have failed as as this is also common. There are quite a few places that you can send your cluster out to get serviced. I had all the steppers replaced and the board gone over by GM Gauge Repair in WI. While they were at it, I had white LEDs, new overlay and needles put in as well. Gives the dash a fresh look.

New lights would be nice but I'd hate to be changing every other light that is out or dim in this truck. There has to be 20 or so that are out or dim through out the truck. Maybe just one color I'd be super happy. I'll look around for someone locally to repair the motors. Thanks !
