Thursday, the wife's Volvo died on her in a parking lot. I thought it was the alternator, but it turned out to just be a corroded battery cable. It was snowing, 30 degrees, and nighttime. I did my best, but I couldn't get it home without headlights.
Anyway, the Volvo dealer picked up her car the next day, I loaned her mine, and I've been driving my father's "spare" 1995 Mercedes S420.
It has 116,000 miles on it. It's white with grey leather interior. He bought it new in January of 1995. Mom drove it for two years, then he drove it for two years. It's been mostly sitting in the garage waiting for special occasions because he likes SUV's.
After only one day, I told him how much I loved the car. He said I could have one for around $10,000. An hour later I called him back to ask him if he was looking for an offer. He said no. The car's not for sale. It only made me want it more.
I haven't owned a RWD car since 1991. I miss the feather-touch steering wheel feel. I miss the smooth ride that a 124-inch wheelbase and 235/60/16 tires give you. I absolutely LOVE bun warmers. I miss thermostat-controlled heat. I miss power seats with lumbar support. These seats move in something like TWELVE different directions. ALL the windows have the "express" up and down feature.
When you close the doors, you just barely let them latch and some kind of a vacuum system sucks them in flush. When you put the car in reverse, these two little antennae pop up on the corners of the back fenders to give you a "reference point" in your side view mirrors. I don't have a CLUE how that's supposed to help, but it sure does look cool!
The headlights have their own wipers that come on when you hit the windsheild washers. The radio has a weather band. Passengers in the back seat have their own lighted makeup mirrors. If they choose to use their headrests, there's a button you can push on the console to make the rear headrests lay back down.
I've gotta get rid of this riceboy racer I've been driving. It's time to get over the midlife crisis. I'm almost 40, dammit, I want shameless luxury. I want total isolation from the road, the wind, the fact that I'm driving 80 mph. I want it to feel like I'm sitting in my living room.
That's how good this car feels. It's virtually a barcalounger on wheels.
