Hi all,
I guess my question is has anyone had an issue with the XT5 transmission? We have 6000 kms on our new 2024 Cadillac XT5 which we loved until it left us on the side of the road..very disappointing!
It was towed to the dealership and we were told they had to order transmission parts but that they were not available???
Any suggestions ideas? Geez wondering if we bought a Hyundai and not a Cadillac

Same happened to our 2023 XT5 at 6,000 miles. Cadillac and dealer very cooperative, supplied new loaner car while they diagnosed problem then installed all new transmission valve body. Took 8 days just to get the part since they weren’t planning such a repair this early in car life.

a report was then issued to dealers. I don’t know if it’s now a common problem. Wife was extremely disappointed to have such a failure this early in the cars usage, but the dealer and Cadillac have been very accommodative in every way.

Hi @gregsophocleous and welcome to the forum.

Firstly, I agree that this experience is a horrible introduction to the Cadillac brand.

Secondly, @njacobsen is correct that the 9 speed has been around for a number of years now and it has been pretty reliable. That said, there are reports of issues with the transaxles in the 2023 and 2024 XT6 and it's the same unit. It's not yet clear what the systemic problem is but my speculation about the cause can be found in this thread: 2023-24 XT6 transmission problems | Cadillac Owners Forum (cadillacforums.com)

There was no design change in this 9 speed transaxle from earlier years to the most recent years but we do know that supply chain disruptions have forced manufacturers to shift suppliers. I suspect that some internal parts are either not being properly inspected before being shipped or there are assembly lubricant changes that are causing issues. We don't know but we do know that there are issues. In comparison, I have the same transaxle in my 2020 XT6 and it's been rock solid for 80k kms.

Is the dealership giving you a good loaner while you wait for the repair to be done?

Hi,
Yes the dealer has been very helpful. They gave my wife a loaner today(definitely not a Cadillac) which was helpful.
I guess the big concern is that they can't get the parts and have no idea when they will be available. That makes little sense to me though.
I'm glad to hear that the 9 speed has been around awhile and is reliable.

Thanks NorthernSRX for the info!

Well thought I would keep you guys up to date..it's now the 19th of August and still no sign of getting our Cadillac repaired. It appears the list of parts to repair the transmission is too large to list, according to the Dealer Service Manager. We have stated we want a new transmission but they (GMC Cadillac) have refused to replace it.
We have filed a complaint with Cadillac but have been told they would get back to us.
I was asked if I would suggest someone buy a Cadillac..guess you know my answer after this type of service on a brand new vehicle.

Where do you live in Canada and are you prepared to share with us the name of the dealership?

May I ask what was the symptoms that led to all this, just purchased my 2022 XT5 last Thursday, Service Transmission light came on today.................., may be something simple, doesn't seem to be issue driving at this point.

Sorry you are having all of these issues, however, I think you are calling out Cadillac unjustly.

You purchased your car last Thursday, 8-15 from a non-Cadillac Dealer. You write this post 8-19. Is that the date you first took it to the Cadillac Dealer following the advice we gave in your other thread? Piecing your posts together, you were reluctant to take you car to the Cadillac Dealer, and before that reluctant to contact OnStar for an issue we identified for you.

If I were in your situation, I would be really p***ed at the dealer where you bought your car. Where did that used car lot acquire this car? Probably at auction because it looked attractive and they saw an opportunity to turn a fast buck and did not care if it had issues because once sold they had no liability. That car is less than two years old. It is highly likely the first buyer did not want to deal with it. So now Cadillac is taking care of you under warranty at no cost to you.

Sorry for the rant. When you post on a Forum such as this, several members watch over the progress you are having resolving issues. When you jump to a new thread, your history with your XT5 is not forgotten.

@Kelly22 ... taking a closer look at your post, I see you copied the text posted by @gregsophocleous which he posted two days ago.

Were you actually trying to make that look like your post without noting it was quoted from another member? It certainly looks as if you are extremely irritated with Cadillac, and you have not been to a Cadillac Dealer. Shame-shame.

Yea, I did copy it, thought I could just do that, new to all this in the site, appologies. As for being Irritated with Cadillac, I'm not, just trying to get some info and resolve myself. Definitely going to a dealer with the transmission service. The OnStar, just a pain, and should have been resolved with the OnStar chat, the OnStar landline call. Dealer may have to fix that also. Its just a bad timing thing for me this week with volunteering for world rowing regatta. Be nice to me here, I'm not as bad as you posted.:)

Looks like Kelly22..mucked up in his post. If he was asking me what my vehicle symptoms were..he should read my posts.
My vehicle was a brand new vehicle bought from a Cadillac dealer.

We have been in touch (had a meeting) with the Dealer Service Manager and the Dealer Principal but they are awaiting parts and it is totally in Cadillac Canada's hands.
Cadillac customer service has yet to return our call from last week (this is not my idea of good customer service) I know we aren't the only customer calling but if they have that many complaints, hire more ppl to deal with them.
Someone asked where I was located in Canada..we are in Eastern Nova Scotia. I am not going to name the Dealer, as in all honesty they have been doing the best they can.

Well guys to keep you updated..it's the 26/August/2024 and still no parts to repair our Cadillac.

My wife now is feeling the vehicle is unreliable and having fears it will leave her on the road somewhere when she gets it back. She is talking about trading it for a 2025 Cadillac but it would be too much of a loss, so now she is thinking about trading it on another brand. This was a very big purchase for her and something she really thought about.

I have also been a big GMC/Chevrolet guy but listen to this..
I had pre-ordered a new 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali which came in the first of June to my Dealer. The salesperson phoned me and told me he was unable to sell it to me due to a recall (I have never heard of this before) Is still at the dealership unrepaired..they can now keep it!

I certainly understand why you and your wife have lost confidence in GM.

If you can provide more detail about a possible build for a 2025 XT5, we can probably give you guidance for the 2025 as it is made available by Cadillac in the US and Canada. You may find a 2025 may not be available with the combination of options you have in your 2024. Several of us have studied the 2025 and have knowledge that may be helpful.

Yes we seen our Dealer had a 2025 coming in but it was spoken for. My wife's was a XT5 Luxury but the one coming was a XT5 Premium Luxury and 10K more, which is totally out of the question.
Funny thing is..she loved her car until this happened. Now she is looking at another Brand, but I also understand.

It's nice that she loved the car. If she got a Premium Luxury, she'd likely love it that much more. Given what you would endure, I'd push Cadillac Canada to buy back your 2024 and sell you the 2025 PL at cost. They'd have a happy customer and a chance to fix up the 2024 Luxury and sell it as a nearly-new CPO.

You owe Cadillac and GM nothing. OTOH, they owe you a car that works and a loaner while it doesn't.

As for your truck, that sort of thing also happens. The timing is unfortunate and you're on an unlucky streak with GM. That said, go back to rule 1 - you owe them nothing and they owe you a car or you walk.

As for the XT5, these transmission issues are frustrating and unusual. Something's going on at the factory and they are not fast-tracking a fix for the vehicles affected. Lemon laws in Canada are pretty much nonexistent so there's not much you can do but rely on the good graces of GM Canada and your dealership.

Good luck.

I mentioned to my wife what you said and that brought a smile on her face.
Although honestly I highly doubt they will do anything for her.
Looks like they are going to lose 2 customers who really don't want to leave.

Let them know what you want and see how close they can come. No harm in trying.

BTW, my mother was born a Haligonian and I have strong roots in NS.

OK guys..got some good news..it wasn't the transmission at all. The dealership had the vehicle towed in (no help from Roadside Assistance) Well it turns out that it was a rock in the wheel !?! I have never had a rock in a wheel in my life and she gets one lol.
I have to say, the Dealership was great. They towed it in and had their mechanic look at it the same day and fix the problem! They also looked into why Roadside Assistance would not dispatch a Tow unless she paid for it..Crazy!!! They believe it has to be something to do with opting in to Roadside?!?!?
Cadillac Customer Service has yet to return our calls..Terrible Service!!!

Our 2017 XT5 has 75,000 miles and has had the transmission recalibrated and new axles replaced while under warranty. While out of warranty it's needed a new alternator ($1,800) and currently needs the thermostat replaced due to the all to common 'Steering Assist Reduced' issue, which will cost me another $1,000. My 2010 Jeep Patriot, bought new, now has 148,000 miles and had a transmission replaced under warranty at 50,000; no other issues. I have a 2008 Volvo XC70, purchased in 2015 with 60,000 miles, and now has 135,000 miles, and has had absolutely no major work done.
I expected more from a Cadillac than Chevy issues.

I totally agree with you..I am very disappointed in Cadillac as I thought it would be a much better vehicle than a Hyundai (turns out I was wrong)
Onstar and Roadside Assistance also surprised me on how POOR the service was. The way she was treated was like the right hand didnt know what the left hand was doing. If she had been out on a dark lonely road, she was abandoned if she didnt have a credit card on her to pay for a tow..just makes me upset when I see that level of service on a supposedly higher end vehicle (price wise) I wouldn't advise anyone to purchase it..go with CAA or AAA for roadside.

#35 ·
CAA is the Canadian Automobile Association and AAA is the American Automobile Association and yes they would be call centers, each in our respective countries.
The good thing with Onstar is its satellite based where CAA is not so you need cell service in order to contact them.

The good thing with Onstar is its satellite based where CAA is not so you need cell service in order to contact them.
OnStar also requires cell service to reach the call center and for commands to reach the vehicle. OnStar has an advantage in the communication module is built into the vehicle and therefore can use a 3 Watt transmitter to connect to a cell site from the vehicle whereas a handheld phone such as a smartphone is limited to .6 Watts.

If contacting AAA from a GM vehicle, a smartphone is required. The only way to use the built in cellular transmitter for a voice connection is to contact OnStar. OnStar eliminated the ability to make voice calls using a minute plan a few years ago. The other function for the built in cellular phone is for data connections, either 4G or 5G. The data connections are for data plan subscriptions, OTA Updates, or Remote Connectivity. If in the US you have an older GM vehicle, such as my 2014 Corvette, the built in cellular device is 2G and no longer works for any type connection because the carriers have phased out 2G.

GM vehicles use satellite for navigation and ONStar location services as well as Sirius XM.

I have a 2025 XT5 with less than 3000 miles on it, bought brand new three months ago. Stopped at a light today, and when the light turned green, I started to drive. Didn’t make it even 300 feet when the car refused to shift out of first gear and the transmission light illuminated. The car will not come out of first gear and will not drive in reverse. My basically brand new Cadillac is now a brick that had to be towed to the dealer. This seems to be a known issue for the past few years - why hasn’t it been fixed?

Sorry to hear you are having a problem with your new car. Welcome to the XT5 Forum. Let us know what the dealer finds and browse around our Forum. There is a lot of helpful information posted and all members are positive owners of XT5's.

Your experience is not something that has been posted previously, but with any new vehicle, bad things happen but Cadillac Dealers are well equipped to take care of you.

Is your XT5 a V6 or a turbo-4? You will find owners of both powertrains posting on this site, but predominantly V6.

First of all, does anyone still use this thread? Next does anyone have any experience with the front collision avoidance system? I was making a sharp left turn from one major street to another, around a curb median. The car jerked, a flashing signal briefly on the dash. This has happened twice. At first I thought it was some type of mechanical problem, but after reading the chapter in the owners manual on collision avoidance, I am starting to think it may have been the avoidance system. Any insight??
