I'm hearing a whine but it sounds like its coming from the front of the car unless my ears are fooling me. It goes away once I go to 4th. Any clues-I can't recall if it's always been there-04 V btw, almost 19K miles, I bought it with 11K on it last May.

There was an issue with harmonics in the radiator hose at certain rpms. Do a search on the FAQ's to confirm. Rear diff' whine is loudest for me at a steady 3,000 rpms in any gear. It's way loud.

I had a bad whine recently and low coolant. The dealer replaced my water pump and I was pleasantly surprised to see it helped with my whine. There's a bulletin on it.
However, I still have a whine that is quite bad in 5th at 64mph even though I told my dealer about that too. Of course this wasn't written on the RO so they tell me the noise is my exhaust, yeah right. They didn't accelerate at 62-65 in 5th.
Good luck.
