Feature programming not coming up...

I'm trying to program my 99 to have the doors unlock when I put it in park, but I can't seem to get 'Feature Programming' to come up when I scroll through the DIC. I was able to get it before but nothing now, no matter how long I scroll through INFO. I'm following the instructions right, car in 'P', key 'ON', and hit corresponding 1 or 2 seat memory buttons with the key fob.

The only thing that's changed has been now, I don't have to apply the brake to shift out of park. It didn't want to come out of park one time, and I give it a little yank. Now if the car's in the ON key position, I can just slide the lever to R/N/D etc w/o any brake. So, I wonder maybe if the car doesn't 'know' its in park? I really doubt that theory though, because the tranny parking pin engages, and even the DIC reads 'P' when I put it in Park.

Any ideas? It's just an annoyance to manually hit unlock everytime I need to get out.

Read the owners manual again. Memory buttons have nothing to do with feature programming. It is the 3 buttons to the right of the instrument cluster.
Quote from Personalization Guide:

With the ignition key ON and the vehicle in PARK (P), press the appropriate memory button "1" or "2' on the driver's door trim panel that corresponds to the number on the number on the back of the RKE,

Press INFO until FEATURE PROGRAMMING appears in the DIC, then press ON/OFF to select features as shown below.
Press INFO RESET to exit programming at any time, and your changes will be saved.
I can only start in park or neutral. Everything else works like it should, the trunk won't release unless in P, the parking brake releases when in D, etc...
Memory buttons do have an effect.. Each memory profile has its own presets.. My car, for some reason did this odd thing of not letting me into the menu sometimes, or if it did let me into the menu it wouldn't allow me to change it.. I would just go back to the temp and then change drivers and try it and it would work.. It was wierd.. has stopped doing it since..
I haven't paid close attention to this on my car, but sometimes I notice "Feature Programming" come up and other times not - I think I only see it when I'm scrolling through the choices using the 'down' part of the Info button. Try scrolling through the menu both ways. At least if I'm an idiot and this is BS it only takes you 30 seconds and you don't get dirty... :bouncy:
You have to be in Park and vehicle stopped for FEATURE PROGRAMMING to become available. I suspect something with Park/Neutral switch in the console (because you no longer have to apply the brake to shift out of park).

I'm an idiot and that was BS. :thepan: jadcock is right - because the car does not believe you are in park it will not access feature programming. I scrolled through my menu on the drive to work today and feature programming was not available because I was in 'D'. Once you fix that problem feature programming will come back.

True, but they are not used in setting feature programming.

That's what I thought about too, but the gear indicator displays 'P' right above the DIC. I think maybe me being able to shift out of park with no brake has something more with the mechanical part of the shifter then elec. because of the above reason. Or you could be right maybe, if there's two switches, one for the gauges and one for DIC, but that wouldn't make sense...

I didn't have time to disconnect the batt. today, will do tomorrow. Still nothing no matter how many times I cycled through (over 10)...
Answer these questions the next time you are in your car:
1. Do the doors lock when the car is out of park? If yes make a mental note and proceed to 2. If No, lock the doors manually and proceed to 2.
2. Do the doors unlock when the car is put in park? If Yes make a mental note and proceed to 3. If no, make metal note and proceed to 3.
3 (pre-requisite) You will need to park close to a wall or something you could see the lights from your car on.
3. Place the car in Drive. If it is day light out and the headlights aren't on, does a dim light pattern appear on the wall infront of you? If Yes make a mental note and proceed to 4. If its not day, turn your twilight sentinel off and try (does the DIC also say headlamps suggested?). If No, make a mental note and go to 4.
4. Set the ebrake while the car is in park. Put the car in gear. Does the ebrake release? Yes make a mental note and go to 5. (4b)No, take mental note, find owners manual and look for the manual release. Drink a beverage of choice :alchi:, make a mental note and move to 5.
5. Put the car in any gear but N. Place foot on ebrake. Lift foot. Does brake release when you lift foot? If yes, My assumption is that the car knows its in park. Make a mental note and move to 6. If no repeat 4b. Do not go to 5 again just move to 6. :)

Lemme know if this helps :-D... :bouncy:

UPDATED: Well during the last two days, after a long (overnight or after work, 9-5) stop, it regains the ability to sense it's in P. It's still tricky to get of P. Somewhere along the drive to/from work, it losses it. The when I first noticed it was, I immediately programmed it, but the car must fall back to some preset mode, lights and horn with unlock/lock and no door lock features. I some also note that when I said it displays 'P', no it doesn't actually, just R and D-1.

Also, when it does have 'P' it's back to being tricky to get out of park. I take the console apart ASAP, prob. tomorrow, before I damage something serious or make the car immobile. HyberB, if I don't find anything when I take it apart, I will try those procedures. Sorry I didn't see your post, sorta give up on it. Thanks for trying to help though :)
