Factory FOB remote starter "installation"

2795 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  PontiacV8
Hi
I have 2006 STS but I do not have remote starter ( button missing from FOB at europe models ).
Are there some missing parts/modules or is it only programming to get factory starter for use?
I mean if I buy remote with starter button can it be programmed to my car without making huge changes to car?

...ok, I wasn't sure on this (in the past) ...and also thought that there are some additional/special parts needed or have to be changed, but...nope...
...so...yes, it is possible to "activate" the remote start on a 2005/2006 european market export STS...and it is fairly easy to do on an export with "remote start delete"...

...well...I've "done" it to my 2006 export STS... ;)

...all you need is the front cover of an us/canadian 5-button fob, the 5-button-rubber inlay...and the rubbers fragil plastic inlay with the 5 little charcoal contacts...
(...so, just buy a used domestic-market-us/canadian 5-button fob and disassemble it for the needed parts...;) )
...if you open up your 4-button export fob you will see a little ("EU"-marked) circuit board, it has the same layout like the domestic market 5-button fob...
(the only difference is, that it is marked "NA" (North America) - and it's working with a 315 MHz frequency)
...the european exports use the 433 MHz frequency band...(so, a domestic fob doesn't work on a euro specs export STS...and...the RCDLR is also market/frequency specific)
...you will see that the little export fob circuit board can also take (and is able to work with) the 5-button parts...
...btw, again, there is no need to change the cars RCDLR (remote controle door lock receiver) from the export-433 MHz unit to a domestic 315 MHz part...the 05/06 export RCDLR is already programmed from factory and is capable for remote start on 2005/2006 exports...it's just not "useable" with our export 4-button fob with the missing fifth button...that's all...

...one little restriction...the (...or my) export nav still doesn't have the menu item for remote start...it's not selectable...maybe there is a little Tech II work/programming needed...I haven't ask my dealership yet...
...so...atm I'm not able to "program" the remote start ( "on" or "off" ) and remote start options via nav in the personal settings menu...but "remote start" is/was programmed "on" ...and two of the three remote start options are/were already programmed..."rear window defog" (at cold) and "climate control" are on...only "seat temp" is off...

...so...to cut a long story short...all I have done was buying a domestic market 5-button fob, swapped/changed the export fob circuit board in(to) the domestic fob case...ran to my export STS, done the remote start procedure (described in the us/canadian owner manual)...and the car started via remote...(no extra programming, no tech II) :D

...some details (pictures) :
(far left the 5-button fob) left the domestic circuit board, right export....they got the same layout...you also see the export 4-button rubber with the plastic inlay equipped with little charcoal contacts...to use the start button the 5-button fob parts are needed

I think there is an option for the IPM Programming to have remote start on/off in the Tech 2 (at least for 08+) I'd think this setting would toggle what you see in the Nav settings screen.
...yeah, that's what I'm thinking, too...so, I will ask my dealer the next visit...time for another Tech II session...(still thinking about a china tech2 knock off...;) )

I can't believe GM went this route.
...yup...lol...you live and lern...:D

...old thread, I know...but there was a question in another thread, so an update here...
...my pictures (links) above don‘t „work“ anymore, edit isn‘t possible, so I just did a new picture upload...
