Fellow V owners!

I an attempt to keep our insurance under control my wife got me a Escort Passport 8500 X50 for my birthday!

Is this the one to have or should I trade it for a better model?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm a Valentine One man myself but I have heard very good things about the 8500 x50. I like the fact that the V1 (hard wired thanks to Reed's FAQ) counts the number of sources and indicates direction. There is a bit of a learning curve but it is by far the best radar detector I have ever owned and I wouldn't leave home w/o it. Just my $.02...

My son and I both have a Passport 8500 X50. They have saved us countless times. I have had several passport models over the years and have been very pleased. The driving force that made me get the Passport vs the Valentine was overall smaller size of the Passport and the lack of POP detection in the Valentine unit. Most folks will tell you that the Passport and the Valentine are the best.

I have an X50, saved me a bunch of times. I've always wanted a Valentine but you can't go wrong either way. Keep it.

I have Valentines hard-wired in both my cars, with remote displays mounted in front of the instrument panel. In the V, my receiver is mounted high on the windshield, on the opposite side of the rear view mirror, so even though it is not in my line of sight, the fore and aft sensors are unblocked by either the mirror, the sun visor, or a passenger. Works great!

I have the X50 and it works great. Have not had a Valentine in a while...but IMHO, the X50 has saved me countle$$ dollar$.

Since you received it as a gift - keep it - hardwire it - and use it

The x50 is good stuff, from what I hear. But the new Bel is supposedly the serious shit, more sensitive than the V1, with POP and KU. Love the x50, but lust for the Bel.

POP has yet to have precedent set in ANY state. I wouldnt worry about getting a coupon as a result of it. Your worst enemy now is LIDAR, the fellas just love to have a unit that looks and feels like a big gun in their hand and have to aim it at you. Gives em a little rod. Get a unit that is sensitive to LIDAR and keep your eyes open. If you hear the LIDAR warning...its too late.

yeah but I have been saved by my Passport detecting Lidar being used on a car in front of me. Any Lidar, K, or Ka signal, no matter how brief, will immediately get my attention. If cops want to catch me all they need to do is use X band.

Thanks for all the input,

I read about the Valentine and that's what I would have bought if I'd written the check, I don't think I'll be trading the X50 for a Valentine (sounds like apples for apples) but I'll read up on the bel unit, I haven't even heard of that one.

According to "Radar Roy"...

Escort 8500 X50 & Bel RX65: The top model for corded radar detector is tied between the Escort 8500 X50 and the Beltronics RX65. The main reasons for this tie is that they are basically are the same radar detector.

Two years ago, Escort bought out the Beltronics company, so now both companies are the same, with different divisions. They share the same office complex, their radar detectors are made in the same plant, and they share the technology.

The Escort X50 is available in red display for $299.95 or blue display for $339.95. The reason for the price difference in the blue display is that the gases used to make the blue cost considerably more then the red

The Beltronics RX65 has voice, what we feel is a better tech mode and Ku band for European radar bands

The Escort has a slanted display window that is designed to give a better view to the driver when placed in the middle of the windshield.

The Beltronics RX65 has a straight forward facing display and is slightly smaller in length then the Escort

As far as performance, they are all identical.

The 8500 x50 will have a flash available soon for KU band since it will be used in US next year.

Valentine now has POP protection.

I love mine. Has "paid" for itself many times over.
The 8500 x50 has always had POP protection.

This is not true. POP is a real threat and those using the guns properly will check your speed with POP and then hit you with a regular non-POP signal. Most of the time you will not even know you are being hit with POP unit. There are several POP guns on the market and there are even some guns that are completely undetectable by any of the top 3 radar detectors. (V1, 8500x50, RX65)

For Example: http://www.mphindustries.com/products_home/stationary_radar_z35.html

They can keep shooting at all the cars they want and no one would even know until they switch it out of POP mode, hit you with a regular signal which will appear to be an instant on signal and pull you over since you will have no time to react.

As far as which one is better... They are all good and no one is much better than the other. Keep your 8500 x50 and register it so that you can be informed from Escort when a new flash is available.

I'm not threatened by POP. It's a flawed way of measuring speed and I'd show it in court if an officer ever tried to hit me with POP to then verify with a conventional gun. The only reason V1 designed a POP sensitive detector was because they'd get slaughtered in the marketing department if they didn't. Like most issues in speed enforcement, what the American public doesn't know is what makes them the American public(Quote from Zelinsky, the Auto Parts King--Tommy Boy).
