A few weeks ago, I lost the use of the front driver's side door handle. I scheduled an appointment with the dealer only to have the problem resolve spontaneously three days later. This was inconvenient because during the time the handle was malfunctioning, I had to enter the car via the passenger side, prop the driver's door open, then open the driver's side door.

This weekend, I lost the use of the trunk handle. I could open the trunk by using the key fob, but not by touching the pad on the trunk. That function returned today and as I was preparing to leave work tonight, the driver's side door handle failed again.....but by the time I got home, it was functioning again. No problems starting the car, and no other electrical problems.

I suspect the battery is starting to die. I have an appointment at my servicing dealer this week for an oil change and the glovebox recall. I mentioned this while setting up the appointment as well. Anyone else have this issue?

My car was built two years ago as of yesterday and to now, only minor issues. I suspect this will be a minor issue as well, but it is vexing.

Oddly enough, that was a thread that I started. :) The passenger door handle was replaced, but I am wondering whether this is a more systemic problem. I will mention this to the service writer, though.

Funny, it sounds nearly identical to my situation. I have had my car for 18 months absolutely trouble free. Then in the past week my passenger side door stopped opening from the outside (but will open from the inside) & the trunk only opens with the key fob. I will get to the dealer this week to have them take a look.

Maybe you're right about the battery. Sounds more like the battery in the key fob. Have you tried the other fob to see if you have the same problem? These have to be some kind of radio devices, and therefore the kind of clothing you are wearing, the sensitivity of the receiver, the strength of the battery, atmospherics etc. are all likely factors in weird operation. So when the handheld battery gets weak over time, more and more of these anomalies should show up. $.02

That's a great idea! Duh, I should have thought of that. Will try it tonight. So far, though, all entry points are working as they are supposed to today. (crosses fingers)

The front door handle issue returned. I tried the other key fob and got no love from the handle.

My car is now overnighting at the dealer for an oil change, the glove box recall, and this issue. Will report to the board when complete.

They gave me a brand new 2011 DTS with 871 miles and a V8. What a cruiser! It rides so smoothly. The column shifter and front bench with seatbelt sure to take me back to my childhood in the 1970's, though.....

Solution from the dealer:

They couldn't replicate the trunk handle issue, but because the door handle wasn't working, they just replaced it as per the TSB. They didn't see any systemic electrical issues.
