White smoke? could it be steam?

Get the cooling system pressure tested prior to driving. You may have a leak, and the engine will overheat, and then be worthless.

Find and repair the coolant leak - it's steam, not "smoke".

The Northstar was designed and tested to run for over 50 miles with NO coolant. Camel Mode. An overheat (with careful slowdown/shutdown) will not affect the engine at all.
