don't know how it happened but when i returned to my 99 STS one day the driver sideview mirror has fallen out of the housing. Nothing looks broken and it looks like it should just pop in but I can't get it to stay. Anyone have any ideas or are there any tricks in getting it back in? :thepan:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do not push in the middle.. You'll fubar the "dimming crystals" if you do. Cut a short piece of 2x3 or 2x4 as long as the mirror (glass part) is tall... use this tool to snap the mirror back in... Some white grease on the middle "button" helps.

I takes some force... Good Luck... Once you've done it once its easy...

Your suggestion worked great. I appreciate it. One last note. The mirror memory seems to get confused once in a while now and when adjusting for a specific driver ends up pointing either all the way up or all the way down. Seems like the motor is catching but once it stops I can use the manual control to adjust as necessary. is that a result of something I did?

Maybe, but unlikely. Your up/down sensor is loose.

On the back of the mirror there are Five thingies that you need to "connect/snap" to for the mirror to work perfectly.
The big middle one that you are familiar with,
Two medium sized guys that connect to the motors and
Two little bits that connect to the sensors...

Chances are that one of the little guys is not connected.

I have had to replace the glass on both my driver and passenger mirror (long story)... On the passenger side I could re attach the sensor thingies AFTER The big middle one by pushing the mirror to the extremes of its travel up and out. (I think... it might have been down and in.. but you get the idea of what we are trying to achieve)

On my driver side I had to use needle nose pliers to hold the plastic sensor bit and snap them in first... This is very delicate as the sensor things can and do break... Once they were connected I used the 2x3 to snap in the glass...

During this whole process I got really good at snapping the glass in and out!

Good Luck!

My driver side mirror likes to lose its place once in a while too. Sometimes when I turn the key it goes up or down. It used to point down when I put it in reverse, but I disabled that so it quit. It only happens maybe once a week or so and it's completely random. Sounds like I might have a loose sensor. Anyone have any pics or how to remove it, reattatch the sensors, and snap it back in?
