I noticed this orange substance on the threads of the steering knuckle to strut bolts and I noticed it again when I took off the coolant purge line fitting. What is it? Is it sealant or anti-seize or something else? Should I replace it? And if so, with what?

Here's a picture of what I'm talking about:



On another note, did you know that the dealership charges over $50 for a replacement coolant fitting bolt like the one shown in the above picture? :histeric:

Probably some form of not-too-aggressive sealant/thread locker.

That purge line bolt/nipple is also a retainer for an engine lift strap, so it may be heat treated, but $50 is a bit much...........

Is ok, BMW charges over $70 for a oil drain plug, half the power and double the money :)

pHOTO A LITTLE BLURRY, BUT i AM PRETTY SURE IT IS a thread locking compound, applied when the bolt was manufactured.
