I have been trying to solve a stumbling, hesitation problem so I have taken many peoples advice and am in the process of changing plugs, wires, distributor, EGR and rotor. Have gotten EGR done and half the plugs (front ones of course) My real problem is the distributor. I took out the ignition coil and put it in the new distributor and swapped out the back wiring harness and all the plug wires, NOW I NOTICED A LOOSE RED WIRE WITH A CONNECTOR ON THE END. I did not notice it when I removed the old distributor cap. Is this wire suppose to go onto the back of the distributor cap on the red wire of the ignition coil (there are 2 little flat wire connectors on the back of the distributor just behind the wire harness connection) The ignition coil has 2 wires colored red and yellow. I see only a spare red wire hanging there. Can anyone help me with telling me where this red loose wire should go?

You should have a minimum of 2 connectors on the distributor cap itself-
a long, rectangular one that is closest to the circular part of the cap,
and
the single, red one that goes on outboard of the rectangular one.

This should be providing the 12v to the coil and the engine should not run if it is disconnected....

*** MAKE SURE you do not put it into the wrong side of the cap! There is one labelled TACH and the other should be BAT. BAT IS THE ONE you want-
If you're looking at that end of the cap, it would be the one on the RIGHT side...
