I have a '91 Sedan DeVille with 135000 miles on it. Recently it started driving like poo. Surging, wanting to stall, sounding real bad.
I could hear a ticking in the distributer cap. I replaced the cap and rotor. I saw that somebody had left the old gasket stuck to the bottom of the coil doubling the thickness and binding the spring keeping the brush from making solid contact.
Car ran better but clicking came back within a day. So I decided to replace the coil. When I removed the cap you could see how the rotor had been grinding on the cap. So I replaced the rotor and cap again as well as the coil.
I can still here the clicking, which is the rotor incorrectly gouging the new cap.
Does this mean my distributer has a bad bearing or something? Is it something I can fix easily myself?

Oh yea I have been driving the car since 35,000 and haven't had this problem

Was mistaken about the noise and symptoms. It turned out I had two bad plug wires arcing. What I thought was gouging was just the way I was looking at it. The scraping sound was actually the wires arcing.
