Is there a way to turn off the auto headlights? I don't want my hid's turning on every time in the dim garage as it is unnecessary wear on the lights and motors. I am talking about in the morning at home. Only thing that might work is leaving the switch set to the parking lights so the HID's will not turn on when starting in the morning.

That's the only thing that will work. But, just so you know, the motors run a test every time the vehicle starts, lights on or not. If you have somebody else start the vehicle (not command), and watch the headlights (in the day so the lights don't come on) you can see it go through its cycle.

I know you are looking for a hard "OFF" switch, but a quick click of the headlamp switch dial to the left completely turns off Auto Headlights. You have to do it every ignition cycle, but it might solve your problem.

I'd rather burn the hid's for a few minutes than a couple seconds. I will test it though and see if it can be done to where the lights don't come on.

Turn the light knob to the left, you should get a confirmation message saying auto lights off

I use the parking lights in my Corvette to keep the HIDs off on startup in the garage. It may run a test, but the HIDs do not light. Even for a second.

My 2014 Lux has standard headlights and the way to keep them off after startup (without having to turn them off after startup) is: BEFORE you start the engine, turn and HOLD the headlight switch to the off position and then start the engine. The DRLs will not come on.

As soon as you release the headlight switch, the auto headlights will take over and illuminate as conditions require.

This may likely work to keep the HIDs off at startup as well.

My Nissan Murano had an off and auto settings as well. If you use the off setting, make sure your wife knows you do not always leave the headlights in the auto position or she may not know how to turn on the headlights in a traffic situation. The SRX defaulting to auto at every start is much safer and eliminates a potentially contentious situation at home.

Thanks for insinuating my wife is an idiot. She's had plenty of vehicles that did not have automatic headlights and did not wreck them nor cause any accidents due to not having her headlights on.

Seems like I've tried this (can't remember the results). I've gotten into the habbit of twisting the headlamp knob to OFF a microsecond (OK, maybe a hundred or so milliseconds) after I push the ignition button, which keeps the HIDs from firing up, but I do see a momentary, dim light reflecting off the shiny do-dads hanging on the wall in front of the headlamps which I belive is the HIDs ignitors sparking up until the knob is twisted to OFF. Then there is remembering to twist it to OFF just before I pull into the garage to keep the HIDs from firing up then too.

I too detest when the "safety nannies" remove a useful feature for the convienience of the oblivious among us.

Unfortunately, the idiots/oblivious around us hugely out-number us. Remember: when you think about how low the median intelligence level is, half of everyone you meet is below that level.

Engineering is not done to account for the normal situation, or even the average situation. It must be done to account for a worst-case scenario.

We have no "off" position, so I guess we'll be ok.

It is interesting that GM allows the user to turn off the DRL lights and Lexus did not.
