Differential problems on The V

I'm a recent owner of a 2005 V and I'm hearing all the differential talk. Can someone give me a reason for all the differential problems? Is there one main reason or a combination? Why didn't Cadillac make a beefier one considering the Hp and torque ratings? I just have 22k miles on my 05, am I guaranteed to have differential problems in the future? Any feedback is appreciated....

I would post a link, but I'm at work. Your best bet is to search differential. There are as many reasons or conclusions are there are threads on the topic.

You have a lot of reading to do. Do a search and come to your own conclusions.
The main reason the break is the wheelhop. Don't launch hard, or do burnouts, you'll be much safer. Some of them get replaced cuz they start to whine. The diff have been updated twice.
Some people go through a few diffs, and some have no problems.
I have my original 05 diff, with 32K miles and no problems.

I find it pretty amazing to what lengths some people are going to prevent the wheel-hop, some pretty ingenious ideas have come up!

Just going to keep mine stock and cross my fingers once warranty is out...

No hard launches and convert over to a high quality synthetic gear lube with regular replacement and you'll probably be fine. The original diff in my 05 is coming up on 50K miles and it barely makes any whine. One thing to look for is a pinion seal leak, front of diff where input shaft goes in will be wet. There is a national recall for that problem so the dealer will fix it for free, had mine replaced around 40K miles.

Same here at least for the time being. You have the extended warranty like I do, so we should be good for a couple more years.

I just had my pinion seal done recently under warranty. Now my case appears to be leaking on the back. Do i request a 06/07 diff from my service advisor? Any advice is appreciated. Sorry for the thread jack.

If you order a diff you will get the latest one from GM. 04-07 Vs all use the same diff PN 25873498 . :thumbsup:

I did research, and I understand some of the reasons, but I guess what I really wanted to know is what isn’t the differential built better to begin with, for a high performance car. Fords do it why can't GM?

apples and oranges. Even fords wheel hop, don't think for a second they don't.. My buddy has a 03 cobra and he has had a lot of issues with the hopping.. He hasn't broke a rear like the caddy guys do, but he still hops bad..

Everything has it's issues.. Nature of the beast. Besides the wheel hop in my caddy I have been 100% happy with the car. Finally I was able to fix the wheel hop and I beat the hell out of mine and it has never broke. I can see why hopping destroys rears though.. it made me cringe every time I heard it hop.. But finally there is a way to help prevent rear end problems.. axles

You may just need a vent tube. If you could replace the diff by "request", you have a great dealer

I've never seen an answer. Maybe it just caught them off guard. The STS-V has the same diff. But with the automatic, it doesn't get the same abuse, so they don't blow.

Ford rears don't break as much.. True.... But they still have their issues and they definately hop. I personally think from a Cadillac standpoint they go after Luxury 1st then power / performance second.. They want the absolute smoothest ride out there while still offering performance, luxury and class.. It's a really tricky thing to tackle.

the V's are amazing cars and I believe Cadillac released them without abusing the hell out of them during the testing stage which they should of done.. They were probably just focusing on a fun, smooth and amazingly fun road car.. Which they are.. The hop is a issue but there are now ways around it.. Besides that I couldn't of asked for a better overall car from Cadillac. They meet my every expectation with the V.. LS power, 6 speed manual, 4 doors and all the luxury you could imagine.. That is the best combo out there if you ask me. Cars are still way worth it.. Fix the little issues with the V and you couldn't be happier..

I noticed after owning over 90 cars that every car made has a few nagging issues to deal with. I am just amazed my caddy only had 2.. wheel hop and the notorious thunk when you shift.. but they are both fixed now.. Pinion support brace and axles did the trick for me.. I couldn't be happier with my V..

When i told my dealer that my diff howls like a rabid wolf at 45 mph and 85 mph, he said bring it in and well change it out. I just recently noticed fluid seeping out of the rear casing. But yeh, i have a pretty good dealer.

55K on my original Diff - changed the Diff Fluid per this forums recommendations (THANKS) and I dont hard launch - hard rolls but NO clutch dumps.

no true fix for wheel hop??? I beg to differ.. I have a cure.. You should buy a set of the axles from me if you want to do this in your car

if you don't believe me that its a 100% fix come on out to utah and take my car for a spin.. your more than welcome

to fix the thunk issue you need the BMR pinion support brace.. Google it and it will come up.. 149.00 I think.. Well worth it.

Sweet car.... Looks just like mine expect probably 100+ HP more lol.. ET? Thanks for the feed back. What is the cost? I live in Houston, not OH.
