Which make, model ? It makes a difference.

VIN 9 is the 300 hp/3.71 final drive performance package; VIN Y is the 275 hp/3.11 economy package. The two engines use different cams and management calibrations as well as the different final drives.

A swap can usually be done but there are a fw hoops to jump through.

Welcome to CF !!!

Should.
I've done it.
Only problem I had was that I swapped the whole powertrain, and the final drive ratios are different.
Computer picked it up and set a code .
This was on a 2000.

the only PHYSICAL difference between a VIN-Y and a VIN-9 ENGINE is the intake cams -
