Hey guys,

I'm in the market for a new daily driver. I'm looking for something on the luxurious side and for something that won't break the bank. I've narrowed my choices down to either a mid-size/full-size sedan or a crossover. I've looked over German and Japanese offerings and even though I really like the Audi A4 and Q5, they're most expensive and more difficult to find with the options that I want. I'm specifically looking into Cadillac as I've always enjoyed their styling. However, I am having a hard time trying to decide between the XT5 and CT6. Both would be the AWD 3.6L and both would most likely be a used 2017 but I was wondering if anyone had cross-shopped the two models before and have any input.

I'm leaning towards the XT5 for more practicality and (arguably) nicer interior design. But the CT6 has certain features like the 34 speaker Bose system and better driving dynamics that seem inciting. Does anyone have any input?

Depends on what you prefer. My wife always likes SUV's for their height and cargo area. I like cars for their driving dynamics / handling. So she has an XT5 and I have a CTS. I can't stand the bumpiness of any SUV. The same bumpy road is smoother in a good sedan. But if you want cargo and towing the SUV is your best bet.

Thanks for the responses so far. I will say that I live in New Jersey so with our Winters, AWD is a must for any car that I get. I'm 25 and plan to start a family in a year or two so I feel like the extra room will be useful. I currently own a Ford Focus ST which is fun and all, but I inherited my father's '94 'Vette earlier this year so I'm thinking that getting a more practical DD is for the best. I'm not looking for the best driving dynamics. I'm looking for a comfortable, entry-level luxury car with space and the features I want (remote start andAndroid Auto being the top two). I'd prefer gas mileage more in line with Audi's 2.0t engines but the fact that the Caddy 3.6L can use 87 octane is a compromise that I can live with.

For those of you who have had your XT5's for 25k+ miles, how is everything holding up? Any squeaks, rattles, or premature wearing in the interior? The drive train seems to be pretty well balanced with not too many reliability complaints from what I've read. Is the 14-speaker Bose system good? I'm no audiophile but I do like loud and punchy music.

Thanks for the help.

We took our XT5 from Michigan to Gatlinburg and I drove 80 as much as possible thanks to my detector. Got 28mpg on way there and on way back got 29mpg same roads same speed. A little less traffic I feel got me the extra mpg.

What model year is that? I figured that I was going to avoid 2016 altogether or does 2017 include that transmission, as well? Does the XT5 have any MY's that use that transmission?
Not sure what year they changed to the new 10 speed. I think it was 2018. Maybe someone else will chime in

The answer is simple , if you want a firmer ride ,more ground clearance and more cargo space ,its the xt5 or better ride , better sound and low clearance , its the ct6.

Yeesh, don't get me going on reliability and also creaks and noise in the XT5. People will be all over me if I start that again on here. Look at my past threads for my XT5 experience which includes a complete lemon on the first one I got.

If you can live with an auto transmission that know to have occasional “not smooth” shifting, then the CT6 is a much better vehicle overall.
I have basically the same 8 speed trans in both my vehicles (Escalade and GMC Sierra) and the trans is usually fine but occasionally shifts moderately harsh.

Considering a 2016 CT6 with 18k. Suppose to take delivery this week. Has the 8l45 transmission not been resolved?

Yes, Cadillac dealer. They will replace the fluid and reprogram it. They want me to do the relearn drive. Is this a fairly certain cure for this transmission? Have people had lasting results, or will I be facing this issue again in the near future.

My XT5 has shifted very well after the updates. After the relearn, the shifting should be quite satisfactory. The first drive after the relearn is likely to be rather rough but will smooth after a few restarts.

Mine was done about a year ago and I have put 17,000 on it since that time. I have heard of others with success and do not recall anyone complaining after that update. I have not checked if there are later updates because I have not had objectionable performance since that time.
