I just recently bought my 1987 Coupe Deville and the service soon and service now lights have been coming on and off. So I was able to find out the codes and their def. from the link on here. But I have pretty much no idea what it means. Any help would be appreciated.

E 13-Right Oxygen Sensor Not Ready
E 38-Open MAT Sensor Signal
E 44-Right Oxygen Sensor Signal Lean
E 48-Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system Problem
E 52-PCM Memory Reset
E 67-Cruise Switch shorted at Enable
F 46-Didn't see the code on the site

My Cadillac is also an '87 Coupe. Right out of the box I'm gonna suggest you get the Factory Service Manual! ebay has plenty of them from $20. Believe me, you will not be sorry for the purchase. The Body Service Manual is also handy to have in your arsenal.
Clear the codes as Ranger suggested and put some miles in(both town/highway). Do not disconnect the battery to clear the codes. E52 means that was done and the RAM was erased. The O2 code most likely will result in you changing the sensor. They were supposed to be changed at 30k miles. Buy only GM or AC Delco sensor.
The EGR code can mean it is faulty/bad vacuum hose or the passages are constricted. Buy a FSM. I've been working on my '87 for 12yrs, so I have some experience with the girl.
The F46 is a refrigerant problem. Low or none at all. The '87s used R12. I converted my AC system to R134a back in '98.....R12 is still around, but 'pricey'....
E codes are from the Engine Control computer system. F codes are from the Body Computer system.

Dave, does your FSM have the chapter on Heating, core removal? my index has it listed but it doesn't exist in the book. not torn out, just not there. Also, the schematic for that is skipped. Weird!

Is this helpful?
Thank you so much, Dave. That is very helpful. Are the heater hoses accessed from Dash side?

The EEC Section in the Cadillac FSM for my '87 DeVille has 67pgs.
How very strange that my book is missing that info. :bigroll: Now I wonder if it's just mine or are all the 92-93 similar. there is no real publisher name like HELM on it but in the right hand bottom corner of the first page under the Table of Contents, it has "Litho in U.S.A." plus it says 1992 General Mot. Corp All right reserved 6-92
Was wondering if that's the publisher name or what?

Thanks again
Julie

Litho in USA. Litho is printing and a litho is an authorized copy of the original work. GM made the original manual then farmed the printing out to a publisher. I found Helm to be the publisher when I saw the FSM for sale in my Owners Manual. Helm isn't listed on my manual either, but next to the Litho in USA is H-2414 which is the Helm part number for the '87 DeVille FSM. Yours should be H-2914....5yrs after '87.
Helm has an 800#. Call'em and ask where your pages are! Righteous indignation!

In the photo: the #5s are the two heater hoses attaching to the core.

Well, misery solved (oops I meant mystery).
sure enough my # is H-2914. If I thought that anyone at Helms would care, I could contact them and threaten to sue for issuing a defective product.:want: LOL! but normally I'm not inclined to waste my breath.

Thanks for all your help,Dave

Well first off thanks for the help. I did end up clearing the codes and have been driving it for the past week. Now the only codes that show up are the E44 and the F46. I took your advice dave and ordered myself a service manual.

I just recently noticed that since the service now light has been coming on more often that it seems like I have less power, expecially when I'm stopped and start to accelerate. Also my average mpg has gone from 16.2 to about 13 mpg. Would the E44 code have anything to do with that? Or do you guys think I have something else going on.

Thanks again.
