I'm the new owner of a 94 Sedan Deville with a 4.9 V8. Looking at the air intake, it seems somewhat restrictive. Anyone have any tips on replacements (K&N?) or modifications?

I have an '88 Sedan De Ville with the 4.5. I put a K&N air and oil filter thei summer. along with some NGK Iridium platinum plugs, swapped the bodily fluids with MOBIL 1 synthetics (engine and tranny) and upgraded the low and high beams with Xenon bulbs. This car (with over 170,000 miles showing) has never run smoother, stronger with absolutley no hesitation and full-pull acceleration through the power curve. Is it the K&N filters? Who knows, it is in all probability the combination of what was done.

The filters were by far the easiest things to change out. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. And with K&Ns guaranteed for as long as you own the car, you only pay once for them.

The headlights make all the differnce, 20hp there! :D

Actually, I have a K&N drop in air filter.....$60, switched to 10W-30 Mobil 1 engine oil, and want to switch to Mobil 1 when I get the tranny fliud and filter changed, I put the HID hyper white blah blah headlights in (made huge differnces, love them) and next spring, plan on doing a nice big and through tune-up and getting nice expensive hi performance plugs and wires......

......the intake is actually pretty free-flowing, only thing would be the very end were the plastic piece connest behind the headlight, that would be the most restrictive part, that and right after that where it comes together.... I think it that was to be cut/opened up a little, that would get more air to the engine and maybe more power?

Next year I also want to get a nice exhaust system on the car.....

Sam go to Home Depot-buy a 22 degree 3 inch pvc elbow a roll of the duct insulation, r-3 and foil tape. Remove the crappy flex piece and the mini velocity stack at the begining of the intake. Now add that 3 inch elbow at just the right angle, mark it and pull it out with the 2x6 piece that goes to the air box. Now glue the elbow to the other piece and let dry. I used gorilla glue, let dry then used siliconed to smooth it out. Now remove the air box. Take inside and insulate with the duct wrap. It should be sticky on one side but you will need foil tape to keep evrything nice and tight. Just insulate the bottom and sides of the air box and insulate the entire tube section so that it can be reinstalled in sections. you can remove the headlight and open up the intake hole and extend from the elbow out behing the headlight and end with a velocity stack from autozone. That is exzactly what I did this weekend to my 4.9 94 Deville. I also relocated my IAT sensor from the intake manifold to the intake just after the filter. I noticed immediated results at part throttle. I have not abused it yet. I'm confident I gained a minimum 15 hp with this mod.

So what did you do just lengthen the wires on the iat sensor.

Yes I lengthened them. I also just moved the sensor up to the elbow before the filter now. It was getting hot from the engine where I first moved it. It feels great. I really want to get a Dyno or one of those cheap performance estimating gadgets to see what power I made so far before I get the custom chip for the PCM. It feels like my Dad's streetrod. If you have the 4.9 I highly recomend these simple mods. My Average MPG has been 20.1 since the 2nd relocation.

Only got the 4.5 . but i thinking about moving the battery to the back and do an intake for the air and alternator cooling . the air will come from out side mounted louvered gills. I think it would get rid of any heat entering in to the air in take. Ill either putt the IAT in the air box or just after the filter
